Keys

Lexus keys aren't always easy to replace. A specialist locksmith is needed to make a spare that works. Unscrew them and keep them safe (they are small and easy to lose). Remove the fob, revealing an indentation of a circular shape where the key's metal part will be. Pop the battery out using the paperclip and insert the new battery, making sure that it's placed correctly. Clip the inside of the key back together.

Remotes

Lexus remotes and fobs can be difficult to replace and require locksmiths who are both experienced and possess the proper tools. Certain models require the transponder inside the key to be reprogrammed so that it can work with the immobiliser system in the car. The chips are programmed using different methods depending on the model of lexus key shell. This is accomplished using a special device which sends a code to the chip to unlock the doors or to start the engine.

Some Lexus cars are designed with a single unit that includes the key head and the remote. They are easier to replace since no separate chip is required. This type of key can also be a bit less expensive.

Transponder Chips

Transponder chips are found in the head of the key on almost all new vehicles manufactured after 1995. They are used to disarm immobiliser systems. The head of a key that is equipped with a transponder chip may be removed to reveal a metallic L-shaped key. A transponder chip replacement key or fob is a multistage process. It involves cutting the keys accurately and programming the chip to sync up with the vehicle's immobiliser.

Transponders are chips with Non-Volatile Memory. It has a set of windings which are fine wires wrapped around a tube. They look similar to those in an electric motor. These windings produce a coded message that the car will read. If the code is correct, then the car will allow you to start it up.

There are two kinds of transponder chip. The first is called the 80-bit while the other is known as the circle + (General Motors). The former is reusable but it needs to be unlocked by a machine that is specially designed to function in a different compatible vehicle. The second type is more difficult to use due to the fact that the old keys can be damaged, broken or taken away when key cases are changed. However they can be used with a service-key that doesn't require a battery.

Immobiliser Systems

Immobiliser systems are electronic security devices that prevent thieves from starting your vehicle. It works by sending an electronic signal from the car to the key whenever you attempt to start it. The electronic chip inside the key responds by sending a unique number of codes that must match the one of the vehicle to allow it to start. If the codes do not match, the engine will shut down immediately and stop the theft of your vehicle.

Modern smart keys and fobs come with an embedded transponder chip that stores security information in a format that can't be duplicated. When your fob or key is installed in the ignition it transmits this code to a receiver within the ECU. The ECU analyzes this code in comparison to the one it has stored in its memory, and then activates both the fuel system as well as the ignition circuit if they match. If the codes don't match, the engine will not start, even if an armed robber attempts to short-circuit the ignition circuit.
