In this novel, Heyer turns a common romance convention upside down. Instead of the afflicted hero turning to sex, gambling or alcohol, the heroine is fighting an internal battle. Leonie has been a boy for the majority of her adult life. She is extremely hesitant to return to being a woman. Avon is a bit difficult to handle however, Avon is able to control his usual biting sarcasm to be a good steward of the woman.

One of the things that I really liked about this book was the way Heyer contrasted Leonie's raunchy ways with Avon's cool planning and reserved. His calm demeanor is starkly different from her impulsive physical reactions and Avon Latest Book blood-thirstiness. I also liked how he was able to defeat the villain without intimidating the villain or chasing him. Instead, he relied on insinuation.

Another thing I loved about this book was the way Heyer subtly pointed out female limitations in their lives in this period. Leonie hates trading in her breeches for layers of petticoats and skirts, she isn't a fan of riding side-saddle and is constantly shooting at villains to death (even when it's a dangerous job). While Avon is somewhat irritated by her rebellious behavior at first, Avon soon realizes that he loves her.

I did find it a bit difficult to keep track of who was who in the beginning, as Heyer refers to the Duke by several different names in the first couple of pages. Once you get it figured out, the book becomes much more comprehensible. This book was fantastic and I highly recommend it. Whether you're a fan of Georgette Heyer or just enjoy an enjoyable romance I can assure you that you will not be disappointed!

Avon's Relationship to Davenant

Avon is not only known for its cosmetics but also for the lucrative earning opportunities it offers and for being a leader in promoting women's financial independence. Avon has been in business for more than 130 years and has always stood up for creativity and optimism, and, most important for women.
