Defra Exempt Multi Fuel Stoves

There is a variety of multi-fuel stoves that are exempt from the regulations of defra. DEFRA compliant stoves approved appliances comply with government regulations and are engineered for fuel efficiency and emissions that are low.

This is particularly crucial especially if you live in a smoke-control zone. Even if you don't need to, the Defra Stove is more beneficial for your chimney and for your neighbors.

DEFRA approved British stoves Approved

You may have noticed that on our website, several wood burning stoves are described as DEFRA exempted or DEFRA approved. These terms may appear to be an esoteric term to the average homeowner, defra Approved British Stoves but they're not.

DEFRA is the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. They are accountable for the policies and regulations related to food, agriculture, and the environment. Defra approved stoves have passed rigorous tests to ensure they adhere to the strict regulations of the government regarding smoke emission levels during operation. These stoves are designed to burn fuels like coal and wood more efficiently. This means they emit less pollution.

This is good news for anyone who lives in a Smoke Control Area because the law currently prohibits emissions of smoke within these areas unless you use an DEFRA approved stove and a fuel that is authorised. In the past it was possible to install a non Defra approved wood stove in a Smoke Control Area, as long as you used only authorised fuels. In January 2022, the laws will change and non-approved stoves aren't allowed to be used unless equipped with a secondary or tertiary system that can reduce their productions of particulate carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and organic gaseous substances.

Our Defra approved ranges are also equipped with a mechanism to prevent you from closing down the top air vent completely. This could result in the fire to smolder and release smoke into your home. Instead, these stoves come with an adjustable air feed which lets you open the top vent slightly while still maintaining an efficient and safe burn.

A stove that is approved by Defra can be fitted with a 5-inch chimney liner. This is important since there are a variety of building regulations which state that you must have a chimney with at least 5 inches of diameter.

Smoke Control Areas

If you reside in a zone of smoke control you'll require a Defra approved stove to legally burn wood in your home. The stoves have been tested by DEFRA to ensure that they meet the strict standards of smoke emissions required in smoke control zones. Multi Fuel Stoves

A Defra approved stove, also referred to as a DEFRA multi fuel or wood burning stove has passed a rigorous test that was developed by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The UK government agency is responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, promoting the agriculture and food industries and sustaining a thriving rural economy. The tests Defra approved stoves must pass are designed so that the appliance emits only minimal amounts of grit and DEFRA approved British stoves smoke when it is in operation.

A lot of the Defra Exempt stoves we stock at Stove Supermarket are multi fuel stoves that allow you to burn approved smokeless fuels, as well as seasoned wood. These stoves are also referred to as Defra stoves, Defra approved wooden burners and are abbreviated SE.

In contrast to older stoves that are generally not suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas, the latest Defra multi fuel and woodburning stoves come with secondary and tertiary air systems to ensure that the wood is completely burned prior to it leaving the chimney. This is a cleaner process than leaving a log on the fire for a long period of time. It also reduces the amount of nuisance smoke that could be produced.

If you reside in a Smoke Control Area, or if you are thinking of moving into one, then a Defra exempt stove is an excellent choice for your property. It's not just more eco-friendly and efficient, but it also helps to reduce the nuisance smoke which can make your neighbors angry.

You are still able to use open fires, barbecues, and pizza ovens in your yard but remember that smoke that is toxic or excessive could be a nuisance for the law and you could be fined. In an area designated as a Smoke Control Area You are not permitted to use open fires or stoves that burn damp, rotten, or wet wood or other fuels.

Burning Other Fuels

Defra Approved Stoves are made to burn a variety of fuels, including wood. They burn wood with such efficiency that they are in compliance with strict emission regulations of the government when operating in smoke control zones. This means that you can use them legally in any area of smoke control provided you're burning fuels that are approved, such as pellets, logs and brquettes. Stoves that have been approved by Defra will be marked with a SE' logo, which stands for Smoke Exempt.

A stove that is approved by Defra differs from a typical multifuel stove in that it has secondary air vents that pre-heat air before it enters into the firebox. This pre-heated, heated air ensures that the fuel is ignited in order to create a cleaner burning. This also helps prevent the accumulation of soot and blockages in the chimney. The stoves of Defra also come with internal baffle plates which help to regulate the flames and ensure even heat distribution.

Installation

This is known as slumbering and it allows part-burned combustibles that could otherwise block the flue to be released into the atmosphere. DEFRA approved stoves don't slumber, and are more sustainable for the environment. They also tend to block chimneys less often.

It is recommended that a HETAS certified installer or Building Control officer install your DEFRA approved appliance to get the most out of it.
