When ANC is turned on, the Q30's 40mm drivers effectively eliminate most ambient noise, and provide very pleasant listening. They have a natural sound profile that is a bit on the treble side, which some might be unable to reproduce bass (we had better results using the Bass Booster EQ preset). But, you can rectify this with the Soundcore app, since there is an 8-band equalizer to allow you to tweak.

The left earcup features a power button as well as a pairing button and an USB-C charging port. The right ear cup has play/pause, the volume up and down buttons. By double-clicking these controls, you can skip tracks or repeat the previous one. They also come with an option to speak to them which allows you to ask them to change the mode or set an alarm. Focal's Bathys Wireless are a set of premium over-ear headphones that feature active noise cancellation as well as Bluetooth playback. The headphones are a bit more expensive than similar headphones, but their exceptional sound is the reason they stand out.

The Focal Bathys are packaged in a small, slim and attractive white fabric-finished retail box that contains all the accessories you require inside. The package includes a fold-flat headphone carrying case, USB-C to USB cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.

The battery's capacity is 600mAh, which can last a whole day of casual listening. They also have an audio input to use wired. When used wirelessly they're paired via Bluetooth and you can manage their functions via an app (now called Focal and Naim which is probably in line with their English Naim brand's network-aware audio products) or by pressing the button located on the left earcup that allows you to switch between ANC profiles like'silent','soft' 'transparent' and 'full'.

The app allows you to alter various settings, including the brightness of the LED and EQ presets, including a "music' profile that sounds more neutral and brighter than the others and also their battery life. It also gives you the ability to select the ANC mode and its level, and also set an 'acoustic environment' which adjusts the sensitivity of your audio to simulate what it will sound like if it were placed in a space with different soundproofing.

The Focal Bathys have bass-rich, rich sound profiles that delivers extra energy and warmth to your favourite tracks. As a result, instruments and vocals are pushed back into the mix, and can sound veiled while details like cymbals and vocals are somewhat less prominent than you'd expect from other headphones. The headphones are also less effective in active noise cancellation, compared to other headphones that feature higher-end technology, like the Sony WH1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony headphones are known for their quality and the WH1000XM5 headphones are no exception. It's located at the top portion of the headphones for over-ear, and is slipping into the luxury lifestyle area where the likes of Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc hang out. The XM5s are costly however, if you are able to find them, there's not a better pair of wireless headphones.

The XM5s are loaded with features that simplify the lives of listeners and, in certain instances, automate tasks they'd otherwise have to handle manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music compressed to near hi-res) and bluetooth headphone's LDAC Technology, are all included. This lets high-quality audio be streamed at bitrates which are higher than Bluetooth. There's a built-in mic for making calls hands-free.

Similar to the previous generation of WH headphones the XM5s excel in noise cancellation. They're among the best at cutting down on the constant drones that can be heard in train and underground carriages. The XM5s do an excellent job isolating listeners from the noise of airports and busy streets as well.

The sound quality is also very good. The XM5s may not be as clear in the low frequencies as the XM4, however, there's a more pronounced sense of clarity and transparency also. The bass on Rage Against the Machine's Bullet in the Head shows the Sonys power and clarity without affecting the rest the music. Similarly, Massive Attack's brooding Angel shows off the XM5s' ability to deliver tight and precise bass notes.

Battery life is also very excellent, offering up to 30 hours of listening with ANC active and up to 40 hours when it's off. This is more than enough for a weekend trip or several days of heavy usage.

The only drawback is that the XM5s lack any dust or water resistance protection. In fact, Sony recommends that you don't sweat into them or wear them out in the rain. This may not be a problem for many people, but it could be a problem for anyone considering the XM5s who spends much of their time in the gym or lives in a city that is rainy.

Apple AirPods Max

Apple AirPods Max is a pair of wireless headphones over-ear that feature Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. They feature 40mm Apple-designed dynamic drivers with an audio profile that is neutral and is focused on the mids and highs without going overboard on either ends of the spectrum. They are ideal for movies and music. They also offer higher fidelity compared to other headphones.

The headphones are light and comfortable on the head. The ear cups, which are made of memory foam covered with woven fabric and are comfortable to wear over the ear they do not place pressure on the sides or forehead. The ear cups also tilt and rotate to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges have a strong but not too strong clamping force, which ensures that the earcups remain in place during listening sessions.

You can toggle noise cancelling by pressing a small button located at the top of the right earcup. You can also use an earphone-style jog dial with a push button like the digital Crown on the Apple Watch. You can turn it around to control volume, and press it once three, twice, or even three times for playback controls. Siri is invoked by pressing and pressing the button. The buttons are well-placed and simple to use, however I was disappointed that there wasn't the power button that could turn the headphones off when not in use. The headphones automatically switch to standby mode when removed from your ears or put in their case, and they only wake up when you slide them over your head once more.

Spatial audio is another cool feature. It makes use of gyroscopes, accelerometers, and iPads or iPhones to determine where you are moving. Then, it repositions the sound to make it seem to be coming from that particular location. This creates an immersive theater-like experience for films and videos recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. The only drawback is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to be used, and it won't allow you to enjoy it on other devices.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I would be a bit disappointed when I spend $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the next-generation model will be better after a year. AirPods Pro are more expensive however they offer superior battery life and more advanced features.
