Private ADHD Titration

There is currently a nationwide shortage of medications that treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and a growing global demand.

Our service is able to offer private ADHD treatment as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our fees for assessments include the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A thorough assessment of your ADHD symptoms will be carried out by a highly experienced consultant psychiatrist. This includes a thorough medical history, as well as an assessment using the typical ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

After your evaluation, you will be informed if medication would be beneficial for your particular situation. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which may be scheduled in person, by video link or over the phone). Your clinician will explain the various options for medication and, if you choose to start on medication we will recommend titrating dosage to ensure the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This process can take several weeks, and it involves gradually altering your child’s medication until the appropriate balance has been achieved. It's not uncommon to to adjust up to three different medications until you discover the one that is most suitable for your child's ADHD. Parents must participate in this titration process, and keep an eye on their child's behaviour to inform the doctor whether the medication is working or causing adverse effects.

If you decide to return to NHS treatment, you will receive a private prescription for your medication. You will be required to pay the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation cost. You'll be required to attend regular appointments every six months to monitor your medication - this includes pulse and blood pressure readings. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the assessment is complete and you are satisfied, you can schedule follow-up appointments with the psychiatrist. Typically, the appointment will take place on zoom video call but in certain circumstances it may be possible to have an audio-only consultation (again at an additional cost).

We will then go over treatment options and choose an individualised, bespoke ADHD medication adjustment. This will include a review and discussion of your medication dose, as well as any side effects you may be experiencing. The cost for these titration appointments is PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 for telephone or online video consultations. The pharmacy will be charged for any medication costs.

The doctor will also ask you about your family history and the impact that your ADHD symptoms impact your life, including any relationship issues you might be experiencing or other mental health issues you might be experiencing. ADHD is a genetic condition, so it's important to examine your family history to determine if you are at a higher risk of developing this disorder.

It is crucial to be honest and transparent to the doctor during the assessment, since the information they gather will be used to determine whether your ADHD fits the diagnostic criteria. This is an important step because a wrong diagnosis could lead to inappropriate medication prescription.

If you've decided you'd like to receive treatment for your ADHD, we will then arrange a follow up appointment with one of our psychiatrists who specialise in this field. If you want to start treatment immediately, you can do this immediately following the diagnosis. You can also take for two weeks before considering the implications of the diagnosis and the options available to you.

We suggest that if you are unsure about your preferences, you talk to your GP prior Titration Adhd to scheduling your private assessment. Some providers have different policies regarding whether or not they require the submission of a GP letter. Check if your GP accepts the Shared Care Agreement, which means that you will be referred to them when you leave the clinic for medication prescription.

Medication

For many people who want an individual diagnosis of ADHD medication is an important aspect of their journey. It can be difficult to get a prescription from a psychiatrist on the NHS. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long and GPs may be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

Requesting your GP to refer through Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry - UK and ADHD 360). You can choose a service who offers a private assessment service and titration. This can cut down on wait time considerably and can be more convenient when you are working and have a busy schedule.

After you have been diagnosed, your doctor will examine you to determine if you require medication titration. You will be asked to fill in forms that differ by doctor but the main ones are self-report questionnaires as well as medical histories from childhood to adulthood. These forms will help your clinician determine if there are any factors that could mean that you shouldn't be taking ADHD medication, if they have been prescribed.

If you are on a titration medication, it is likely to consist of stimulants and non-stimulant drugs. These will be carefully examined and monitored to determine the most suitable combination for you. Based on the type of medication you are taking, follow-up appointments can be scheduled either monthly or quarterly.
