Window Sash Repairs

The sash is an interior frame that can move upwards and downwards in windows that open. This article will show you how to carry out a few simple repairs to the sash.

Weather Stripping

Wood window sashes add an elegant look to your home. If properly maintained, they can last for years. However, they can be damaged or deteriorate over time because of exposure to the elements and wear and tear. The first step in repair sash windows is to address weather stripping, which is found on both the sash and frame. It can cause drafts if it's damaged or is loose. To fix it, start by determining the brand of your window and glass manufacturer date (etched in the corner of the glass or on the aluminum spacer between panes). Take the sash off, and mark its width and height so that you can find a new weather stripping that is compatible with the original.

Then, take the sash from its holder and place it on an even surface that allows you to access all four sides. If your sash is double-hung, you'll have to remove the weights and their ropes that should have fallen into the pocket of the jamb liner. Once you've removed the sash and the weights, use a utility knife to cut away the weather stripping from the corners, then remove it by hand or using a putty blade.

Once the sash has been cleaned, you can replace the stoppers that separate the two sashes. These are long pieces that separate the sashes. Pam prefers to use standard 1/2-inch by 3/4-inch window trimmings from the lumberyard. However, you could substitute for a scrap piece of lumber.

It is essential to have the tools you require before you start. Mark the hinge channel location on the frame (Photo 1) using a pencil. Sash Weights

They are not expensive and easy to install if purchased them from salvage shops for architectural use. Based on the size and shape of your window you may need to use one or two sashweights in order to keep it open.
