What is a Defra Approved Stove?

A defra-approved stove is a wood-burning stove that has been approved by the UK Government Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. This allows them to use in Smoke Control Areas within the UK.

Defra is an English government department responsible for protecting the environment, food production and standards, agriculture, and a flourishing rural economy. Defra has also developed robust protocols for managing notifiable illnesses.

Defra approved wood stoves and multi-fuel stoves comply with the standards of emission set by the government for use in Smoke Control Areas. These new standards do not prohibit the use of wood stoves in these areas, but they do impose restrictions on how much smoke they produce when operating.

Smoke Control Areas are found in several areas of the UK. This means that you are able to only use exempt devices or burn fuels that have been approved. This is in order to reduce air pollution from burning unauthorised fuels that cause nuisance smoke and ash to build up. To avoid violating the law or being fined, you must only burn wood logs in an approved DEFRA stove, fire, or fireplace. If the stove is stamped with the DEFRA logo, then you can be assured that it has been approved by Defra for use in smoke-controlled zones and can be used to burn wood within these zones. It is still necessary to have an appropriate chimney liner, however, smaller 5kW stoves can be fitted with a 5" twin-wall stainless steel liner instead of the standard 6" liner.

You could be eligible for a license from your local authority if you don't own a DEFRA-approved stove. This will permit you to use fuels that are not permitted in your home. You'll need to go to the DEFRA website to see whether you are eligible for an exemption. There are certain guidelines to follow for example, installing a smoke detector.
