Changing the Battery in Your Mini car keys Key Fob

The key fob allows you to lock and unlock your vehicle from some distance. It can also activate the panic button on your vehicle which will deter burglaries.

You can fix your device by following a few simple steps. Make sure that the battery is new. Remove the battery from the ignition, then press the lock button fast three times.

Battery

The most simple way to fix your key fob's battery is to replace it. The fob has a tiny coin-shaped 3V battery (CR2032 or CR2025) which is typically easy to find in general stores and home improvement stores, and some auto parts stores. Use a brand new battery. Old batteries can damage the circuit boards and become less useful.

Begin by removing the fob. You may have to use a flat screwdriver to break the two halves. Then, you can insert the screwdriver into the seam on both sides of the fob and lift the clips that hold it. They are easily broken, so be careful and slow.

Reassemble the fob after replacing the battery and test to determine if it does what it is supposed to. If it doesn't work, try pressing the button a few times before confirming whether the contacts are clear. You can also try it with an additional key fob to determine whether the issue is limited to a particular key. If it isn't it could be another reason why the key fob isn't working. For instance, it could be that the button is worn out. This would trigger the button only occasionally, not all the time.

Interference

The key fob is powered by a small transmitter that transmits signals of a short range to a receiver located in your car. Its goal is to enable your car to recognize the fob and unlock its doors when you approach it and start when you press the ignition button in.

Interference can interfere with communication. If you charge your second-generation Apple Pencil while holding the fob (via iGeneration), it could prevent you from unlocking the vehicle.

Other electronic devices that operate at the same frequency can also interfere with the fob's signal. Garage door openers or tire-pressure monitoring devices can also be affected. Even a transmitter at your home could be causing interference, but this isn't easy for professionals to test.

Your key fob may also need to be reprogrammed. The transmitter in the key fob needs to be recognized by the mini replacement key's receiver. A unique code is then used for each pairing. Fobs have to be reprogrammed when they are removed from the system or replaced, after you buy a new one and in some cases when the battery is replaced. To reprogram a fob follow the instructions in the user's manual of your device or go to a dealer to seek assistance.

To avoid further problems, make sure you purchase an appropriate battery for the car model you have.

It is also crucial to make sure that the fob isn't exposed to soapy residue. The presence of water can cause corrosion, which can interfere with the circuit board. If this is the case, you will need to clean the circuit board with isopropyl alcohol or electronic cleaner prior to putting in a new battery.

After the battery has been replaced, it is a good idea to test the fob's function before driving the car. Using a voltmeter, check the voltage of the new battery to determine whether it's at a safe level. If not then it may be required to replace the entire chip in the remote.
