The iRobot J7+ was a fantastic obstacle avoidance robot, but it did not always do a great job at avoiding dirt or crumbs on my carpets. It also tended to over-vacuum some areas, which resulted in a lot of extra dust in the filter, and an unclean home.

Smart Mapping

The best robot vacuums have an app that lets you customize cleaning modes, create schedules, and see an image of the floor area covered by the machine. This is a handy feature, and one that a few competitors do not have. This allows you to create profiles which will automatically start the robot at specified times and run it regularly. For example, it could be cleaning the living room each morning or prior to dinner.

A good app can let you control your robot using voice commands. Certain models are compatible with Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant, which allows you to control your robot through voice commands.
