How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window can cause a lot of trouble. It can also be an opportunity to upgrade your glass to energy efficient or insulated windows and enjoy benefits such as improved comfort, increased the value of resales and lower utility bills.

It's a project you can take on yourself for only a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional. You'll need only the proper tools and a few hours of your time.

Glass

Replace your single-paned windows with tempered or insulation glass to improve the efficiency of your energy, reduce noise, and maintain the historical integrity of your home's older. A majority of homeowners with hand tools can replace the window pane. Alongside a replacement windows pane, the following items are required for the replacement process: latex glazing putty pliers, glazier's points and the use of a heat gun to warm the old putty if required. Wear safety glasses and gloves prior to beginning. Working with broken glass could cause serious injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. It is recommended to use pliers for this however, a flathead may work as well. Utilize a wood chisel or putty knife to get rid of any old putty that remains around the frame and the window sash. Take your time and work slowly making sure not to break the existing window sash. It is recommended to work using a sturdy ladder rather than the ground and have someone stand below the sash to help hold it steady.

Once you've removed all the old putty, you can prepare the window frame to fit the new pane. Take measurements of the width and height of the opening for the sash, subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). Bring these measurements to an hardware store or home center, and get a piece of stock glass cut to size. Alternatively, you can cut the glass yourself if have the right tools.

After putting the new pane in place, run a small bead of caulking along the edge to seal it against weather. Install a glazier's pointing on both sides of the frame. This will ensure the pane. The points should not be so tight as to cause friction between the sash and the frame however they shouldn't be too loose.

Before applying the putty to the surface, gently knead it until it is smooth and free of lumps. Roll it into pencil-sized strips. Apply the first strip in the corner of the frame, moving from one corner to another so that it is smooth and even.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's facets are small triangular pieces that help secure glass into a window frame without scratching or damaging the fragile surface. Understanding how to use these tiny helpers is simple and can save you money on professional installation or the cost of purchasing new glass.

Once the old putty and glazier's points are removed Clean the frame thoroughly with a utility knife to remove any remaining residue. If needed, lightly sand the wood along grooves of the rabbet to smooth out rough areas. If you sand wood protect it with painter's tape to protect it from damage caused by accidental sanding.

Write down the dimensions of the frame. These measurements can be brought to the hardware or home center store, and the new frame will be cut to a smaller size. This will ensure that the pane fits comfortably and allows for expansion and contraction.

Insert the new pane into the frame and push it in using your hands. Make use of the point of the chisel or the back of the putty knife to tap the glazier's points, as shown in Figure 11. If you paint before the putty has completely dry, it won't form an effective seal and could discolor or leak in time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a damaged piece of glass. But the truth is that replacing one glass pane does not require a huge amount of money when you do it yourself. Even a double-paned window could be replaced for a fraction of what it will cost a professional.

If you're working with large glass windows first, ensure that it is securely fixed to the frame. By using the correct tools and techniques, you can accomplish this task fairly easily and fast.

When you are ready to start taking down the old window pane. Take out the metal glazing points attached to it. These are essentially small metal triangles which function as "nails" that keep the window in in the wood frame.
