Why Window Repair Is Necessary

Paint that has chipped or peeled

Water seeps through the wood, and once it evaporates, the pressure beneath the paint film causes the paint to peel. The moisture can be caused by condensation in the interior, or snow and rain outside. No matter the source, it's important to scrape and sand the surface and then repaint as soon as the paint begins to chip. Some meticulous painters add a water-resistant preservative or thinned boiled linseed oil the bare wood before painting to prevent moisture penetration and help the new paint hold better.

If paint begins to chip off, it's time to repair timber windows your window. To remove any paint that may stray, place a dropcloth or tarp on the surface before applying a fresh coat. Remove any loose paint with an utility knife. Be careful not to gouge the wood below or cut into the sheathing beneath. Clean the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.

After the area has dried then sand it once more using a fine-grit sanding block. This will prepare the surface to receive primer and create a base that is ready to receive paint. Then paint and prime according to the instructions on the specific tin of paint you're using. Follow the temperature and curing instructions on the can of paint as they differ depending on the type. Paint the exterior with exterior grade paint, and the interior surface with interior-grade paint.

Repairing chipped or peeling painted frames is a less expensive alternative to replacing them. If your window frames are damaged beyond repair, it could be worthwhile to upgrade them to newer windows that are more energy efficient.

Cracked Glass

A broken window leaves your home open to wind rain, insects and wind. You might be tempted to just replace the glass, but you could also fix it yourself if it's not too severe of crack or break. Repair small cracks as soon as you notice them prior to them getting more severe due to temperature fluctuations or the passage of time.

There are a variety of ways to make cracked glasses appear as if they are not there. But this isn't something that is achievable by a DIYer. A small crack can cause a weakness in the window, which can eventually lead to more breaks and a larger replacement. Covering the crack with plastic is a good solution. This protects it from the outside and blocks moisture or air from seeping through, which can harm the frame or seals around the windows.

Put on your safety glasses and gloves prior to taking the broken glass off the frame. You'll need an utility knife, scraper or chisel to get rid of any glazing points that hold the glass in place. It is also recommended to use the knife to pry out any wood that is bare, then clean and seal that area with Linseed oil or a clear wood sealer.

Then, you can use epoxy to glue the glass back in place. This is the longest-lasting method, but it can also give your glass a more substantial appearance. If you are using epoxy, select the double-cylinder model that distributes the resin and hardener in a similar proportion. This allows you to control exactly how much is applied to the glass which will ensure a solid seal.

When you are resetting double or triple pane windows, make sure the gas fills are in good condition. These gases are vital for insulating and keeping warm inside your home in the winter and window repair outside in summer. If you remove the glass, those gases will escape through the crack and cause the window to lose energy efficiency. Gas fills can be replaced using the same method as to repair cracks in other kinds of glass.
