It also has an extremely powerful battery that can be cleaned for up to two hours before returning to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

This technology is extremely effective in navigating toys left on the floor or furniture legs that are sticking out from underneath objects. It also has a camera that can snap the Roomba back to the real world when it starts drifting from its intended location.

iRobot has also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that do not have bristles and are therefore more likely to resist the tangles that previous models. They're also a bit taller than older rollers and are able to fit under beds and couches that are low and are designed to help this model navigate more easily across a variety of flooring kinds.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other models of this class, though, is its incorporation of the latest dirt detection feature that utilizes a camera to spot tiny bits of dirt. This is a great improvement over the previous version that relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage method to bounce around a room and clean it at minimum three times from various angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on both carpets and hard floors. Its score on low pile carpet was very good and it also scored a excellent score on mid pile, too. It did a fair job of removing pet hair, but it was struggling with very thick and long pet fur that was clumped together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our best mapping Robot vacuum-performing robots, and isn't even far from being as costly as the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It still has a lot of features that we'd like to see in a top-of-the-line model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration that you might find in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is ready for use as soon as you are ready to. After taking off the pull tab for the battery and the yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all that you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or an outlet on the wall, press its large "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will return to its dock when the battery runs out or it's full of debris, and it has indicators at the top for when the bin is full, it needs to be recharged, or its Wi-Fi signal is not working.
