It also has a feature called smart mapping that uses multiple sensors to suss out the areas of your home that need attention and make a tidy path around them. This technology is very efficient at navigating around toys that are left on the floor, or furniture legs that are sticking out from underneath things. It also has a camera sensor that can snap the Roomba back to the real world when it starts to drift from its actual location.

iRobot also added an additional set of rollers beneath the Roomba which do not have bristles and therefore are more likely to withstand knots than earlier models. They are also taller and can be tucked under beds or couches that are low. They're designed to make the model more movable on various flooring types.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other models of this class however, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature, which uses a camera to spot tiny bits of dirt. Despite these small shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and it's not even nearly as expensive as the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It's still packed with a variety of features that we'd like to see in a top-of-the-line model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration you might find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is simple to set up and start running right away. After taking off the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from its undercarriage it is simply connected to the wall socket or one of its Home Base docking stations, hit the "Clean button" and let it do its job. It will automatically return to its dock when its battery runs out or it's full of debris, and it also has indicators at the top for when the bin is full, it's time to recharge or its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
