Lidar, cameras and 3D mapping sensors are powerful devices for robot vacuums to track their surroundings. They can provide top-quality obstacle-avoiding. However, some prefer to stick with a straightforward vac that's affordable.

1. Neato Botvac D4

This Neato is a great option for those who want to take advantage of the convenience of a robot vacuum cleaner without having to sacrifice a lot in terms of performance. The D4 offers an excellent mapping and navigation feature and smart home integration and an easy-to-use app with the price that won't break your budget.

To set up this bot, you must plug it into its base and connect it to your home Wi-Fi network. The Neato app will guide you through the initial setup (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi, giving it a name, etc.). Once the D4 has been fully charged it's possible to start a cleaning cycle.

Once you've got the D4 running it's possible to use the app to create an automated schedule or manually start cleaning whenever you want. You can also control it with your voice via Google Home or Amazon Alexa. And if you have an Apple Watch, you can even start cleaning sessions by simply tapping the wrist.

In our lab tests the model performed well on both hard and carpeted floors, picking up 91.3% of debris combined in serpentine paths. However it's not as efficient at edge and corner cleaning as the more expensive models. Its side sensors keep the D4 approximately 1.5 inches from walls. It also doesn't have the side-sweeping brushes found on all but the cheapest robotic cleaners. Furthermore, its raised turret means it can't be used under furniture with low clearance. However, it does support virtual No-Go Lines so you can draw lines on your floor plan to inform the D4 not to go there. The battery lasts for 75 minutes, which is also average. This is an affordable price to pay for the convenience of this model.

2. iRobot Roomba 990

The iRobot Roomba is the flagship robot from the company, with top performance and features that are connected. The 980 is priced at $800/$899 but it's typically cheaper if you shop around online (John Lewis or Amazon US are both good places to begin).

The 980 is the most sophisticated of our top choices. It comes with a HEPA-filter that can capture micronized dust and allergens to improve the air quality in your home. It also supports a range of flooring options, including hardwood and tile.

The 980's top-mounted camera, SLAM sensor, and the ability to navigate through tight spaces such as hallways and corners are among its most notable features. iRobot refers to this technology as iAdapt 2.0 and it makes use of images taken by the camera in order to create an internal map. This helps the 980 track the location it's been to, so it doesn't have to spend time cleaning areas that have already been cleaned.

iRobot has also introduced new capabilities that are smarter than ever, like a spot clean function that lets you designate an area of your home as not accessible to the 980. 3. iRobot 985

The latest iRobot robot offers the best obstacle avoidance of any Roomba we've tested, because of its front-facing camera and laser sensor. This allows it to avoid pet feces and wires much better than other robotic vacuums we've reviewed, such as the EcovacsN8Pro, Roborock S7 Pro Ultra Robot Vacuum with Alexa S6MaxV, and others.

It's also iRobot's most powerful vacuum, capable of taking on dirt with more granular debris and larger pet hair, unlike other mid-range models such as the Roomba 960. This is due to the cleaner's larger counter-rotating brushes, as well as a stronger motor that can pull more suction power.

The Roomba 995 is iRobot’s least expensive vacuum, and comes with recharge and resume. However it doesn't have the auto-empty feature that the I6+ or I7 offer. It also lacks iAdapt 2.0 navigation and the camera that the I7 utilizes to identify objects and avoid obstacles. It isn't able to access features such as in-app containment or save maps.

It works well on floors that are carpeted or bare, picking up food crumbs and dirt that has been tracked in. It's also great in navigating around obstacles and avoiding them. It does a good job of cleaning embedded dirt.

This robot utilizes iAdapt navigation 2.0 to track its location. This allows it to navigate the space efficiently and avoid becoming stuck. It can see the floor, its objects and obstacles by using SLAM and a top-mounted camera. It can even be placed under couches and tables because of its low profile. It can also return to its dock for recharging when necessary.

The 960's navigation, despite lacking some advanced features such as maps-saving and selective cleaning of rooms is superior to that of many other robots. It also has a bigger dust bin than the 690.

The iRobot Home app for iOS or Android lets you control the 960. It offers a variety of features for automation, including the ability to set cleaning preferences, schedule, trigger spot cleans and track the battery's condition.
