What is a Defra Approved Stove?

It is still necessary to have an appropriate chimney lining however, smaller 5kW stoves are able to be fitted with a 5" twin-wall stainless steel liner rather than the standard 6" liner.

If you do not have an DEFRA approved stove you may be able to obtain a licence from your local authority to use non-approved fuels in your home. You'll have to check the DEFRA site to determine whether an exemption is available. There are also certain rules to be followed for installing smoke alarms. You will also need to comply with the rules for Smoke Control Areas if you have an outdoor barbecue or garden chiminea.
