1. iRobot S8

This smart robot mop and vacuum is a great choice for many households. It comes with a fantastic navigation system that incorporates GPS and laser sensors. It also comes with many features and controls accessible via the app. It also comes with a helpful feature that allows you to add Cleaning zones for certain areas that require extra attention, as well as Keep Out zones where you do not want it to be. It also gets software updates, similar to all Roomba products, which enhance it over time.

It's costly but it's also among the most advanced robot vacuums that ZDNet has evaluated. It's equipped with a powerful battery that can clean a large home in under two hours, and it can switch between mopping and vacuuming by pressing one button. Eufy, owned by Anker is now an iconic name in the world of budget robot vacuums. But it didn't offer the option of a model that could mop. That changes with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive suite of advanced features and can compete well against more expensive models.

Laser navigation is the main selling point of this machine. The X8 utilizes laser mapping technology that is more precise than the previous Eufy devices. It also takes significantly less time to build up a comprehensive picture of your space and stores multiple maps, which is great for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is still a decent vacuum on floors with no dust that can carry debris under its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with ease. Its tyres are adept at hugging edges and corners despite being circular. It's not the best cat litter picker, though our tests have shown it is able to remove around 90 percent of the fur off hard floors.

The mopping mode that is the basic one uses the same water reservoir as the vacuuming mode. While this is great for loose spills however, you aren't able to regulate the amount of water it is using and this will reduce its effectiveness for more severe staining. It's effective in removing hair from pets. It has a higher rate of pick-up than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Known for quietly effective home appliances Miele's RX2 robot vacuum comes with outstanding cleaning power, beautiful design and excellent navigation. However, it does have some operational hiccups which prevent it from being considered as the top overall smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 comes with a dual-sensor mapping system that uses a LIDAR to map a room as well as a pair of 3D scanning cameras to detect and eliminating obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once mapped the app allows you to create virtual no-go zones as well as favorite sections that the robot will automatically clean. You can also initiate an automatic vacuum and mop robot clean or manually change the cleaning mode, watch a live feed from the onboard cameras and more on the main screen.

The sensors of the RX2 work well in registering furniture and other obstructions in real-time. The suction and sweeping capabilities are outstanding, effectively taking away surface debris from carpets of medium pile and also removing embedded dust on bare floors. It's not the most powerful robot on the market. It's not the most efficient climber and has issues with metal threshold transition strips.

4. Shark ION

This round, budget robot vacuum that vacuums and mops is just like your typical robot but it's an upgrade in terms of performance and features. Its smart mapping system generates 3D and 2-D maps of your house and uses them to navigate around and avoid obstacles. It's even able to spot common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real time. This combination of sensors along with a bump sensor, and an infrared drop sensor that keeps it away from stairs is what makes it one of the most agile vacs we've tested.

It was able to walk over thick shag carpets and was not stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigation skills were also impressive; its composite score in carpet and bare floors beat out the competition and it took in 98.5 percent of the surface litter and embedded pet hair from our laboratory test samples.

The controls are less basic than those of the competition's. There is a cleaning button on the top and you can either start it by using the app or by voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule weekly or Best Robot Vacuum daily cleanings, set up no-go zones and view its cleaning history. Ion is covered in a smart dark gray plastic that is both attractive and beautiful in your home. The rear dust bin is accessible for emptying and cleaning the filter is just as simple.

5. Eufy 11S

Eufy 11S is a great option if you're looking for a robot vacuum that's simple and doesn't have any frills at a low cost. It isn't equipped with some of the smart features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, which are available in higher-end models, but if you don't need those functions you can save cost with this model.

The robot is easy to set up and use. It does not require smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However it does include the remote control that lets you choose between various modes and adjust the suction levels. It also lets you manually turn off the robovac during scheduled cleaning.

In our tests during our tests, the 11S was very effective at cleaning dirt and pet hair from hard floors and in carpets with a low pile. Its slim profile made it easier to get under furniture and other low items that some of the more bulkier robots couldn't reach. It was able to get easily over thresholds of doors and transition from one floor type to another.

The 11S, like other robots, can also eat some objects, such as cords and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests that you can stop this by keeping these objects off the floor and by using the possibility of a cord organizer. It also suggests that you periodically clean the dustbin, change the filters and wash or change the brushes when necessary.

6. IRobot Roomba 980

The Roomba 980 is iRobot's flagship robot vacuum. It's costly, but it's the best robot vacuum that you can buy. Its self-navigating capabilities and environmental mapping are a wonder to behold. It is more sophisticated in its automation than the majority of its competitors, including the ability to create virtual boundary markers with its mobile app. Although its app is a little sluggish and the 980 can spin a bit when rolling over cables, it's a very capable robot vacuum.

One thing we love about the 980 is that it makes use of its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors as well as visual simultaneous mapping and localisation technology (or vSLAM) to memorise the floor plan of your home. It will use this information to create a consistent, efficient cleaning path in every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient vacuum than other high-end robot vacuums.

Other features of the 980 include dual multi-surface rubber brushes which pick up dirt from hard floors and carpet, along with an ejector brush that moves debris into the bin of the robotic vacuum. The sensors for floor tracking help it navigate between furniture and around edges, while Cliff Detect keeps the Roomba from slipping down stairs. It also automatically returns to the base station for simple charging between sessions. Although the 980's battery life and bin size aren't quite as efficient as some other robot vacuums, it's a solid and reliable machine that will keep your floors spotless for hours on end.
