Avon Books - A Brief History

Avon Publications was founded in 1941 by the American News Company as a paperback publisher. It started with a focus on comic books but quickly changed to include a range of genres, including romance.

Today, Avon is an imprint of HarperCollins which also owns Harlequin. Their Diamond Anniversary celebration is underway.

Avon Publications

In the beginning of paperback publishing Avon Books was a major rival to the more literary Pocket Book company. Avon focused on mass-market appeal and published westerns, mysteries, and romances that had attractive covers. Their books were cheaper than the more expensive Pocket books and they were targeted at women in the home, who could read in between cooking and cleaning.

In addition to standard-sized paperbacks, Avon also published digest-format papers (the size of contemporary short story magazines) in series like Murder Mystery Monthly and Avon Book October 2023 Avon Fantasy Reader. These editions contained many authors that are sought-after by collectors today among them A. Merritt, James M. Cain and H. P. Lovecraft.

In the mid-1950s Avon was selling over 20 million books each year. The 25-cent "G' series included the popular genres of westerns, whodunits and boy-girl romances. Avon had a 35 cent "T" series that included the usual suspects such as science fiction, mystery, and other similar genres.

In its early years, the company's focus on attracting readers led to the publication of fantasy novels, ghost stories and sexually explicit love stories. These were far from the more literary Pocket competition. In 1959, Avon was bought by the Hearst Corporation and the focus shifted toward more mainstream literature.

Avon is the largest women's beauty and fiction company in the world with a presence across five continents. They also have offices in more than 100 countries. Avon is a leading publisher of Sunday Times and Kindle bestsellers. They specialize in suspense, thrillers, and crime. The company is proud of its female-focused roots and has opened the door for female entrepreneurs across the world. It is a world leader in sales, marketing and innovation, making a difference in communities around the globe.

Avon Impulse

Avon was founded in 1941 as an publisher of paperback books and comics. Later, they became a specialist in romance novels. Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams founded the company. Meyers recruited sisters and brothers to staff the company. He wanted to create a rival of Pocket Books. They created this by printing low-cost paperbacks that had huge appeal and dazzling cover designs.

Avon reached its peak as a romance publisher novels in the 1970s. The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, a sexy novel that spent 33 weeks at the top of the New York Times bestsellers list, was published. They also published the sexy books of Rosemary Rogers, including Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies. These were the first time that a single title topped the chart for this genre.

The company was bought by Hearst Corporation in 1959. Hearst focused on the romance offerings of the company, causing it to grow into one of the biggest publishers of this genre. The company continued to publish cheap paperbacks in popular themes such as westerns and whodunits. However, the focus on romance increased their profitability.

Avon is still publishing romance novels even today. Avon Impulse is a digital imprint that offers ebooks and paperbacks. The imprint accepts submissions from writers who aren't represented by an agent. It also lets authors test their limits without worrying about the reaction of the publishing industry.

Avon Impulse offers a 25 percent royalty on the first 10,000 downloads and 50 percent on each subsequent sale. The editor edits the book and creates an attractive front cover. It is available in ePub and Kindle formats, and in other formats as well.

Avon Women's Fiction

In the beginning, Avon books were priced at 25 cents to 50 cents, and featured an alpha-numeric code. Avon launched the 35-cent series "T" in 1953. It contained many Westerns and Whodunits. Later, they introduced the modern romance genre with Kathleen Woodiwiss's 1972 publication of The Flame and the Flower. This was the first romance on paper published in the original format. It sold over two million copies.

Throughout the 1970s, Avon continued to dominate the romance field. The decade saw the rise of the bodice ripper, and the cover art became more lurid. Avon published a group of writers dubbed Love's Leading Ladies, which included Kathleen Woodiwiss and Rosemary Rogers. Johanna Lindsey, Laurie McBain and Johanna Lindsey were also part of this group of writers.

Avon Book October 2023 and Harper Collins merged in 1999. Avon's non-romance hardcover and paperback collections were transferred to Morrow which was the sister imprint of Harper Collins. This left avon sale book publishing romance novels. Avon Books was eventually renamed and is still a major part of HarperCollins. The catalog has grown to include more than the classic romances, but also women's fiction, saga, and an increasing number of thrillers and suspense.
