Leonie is a girl who has been living as a boy for the majority of her life. She is extremely hesitant to return to being a woman. She is a pain for Avon to manage initially but he manages to keep his usual jokes and takes good care of her.

Heyer did a great job of contrasting Leonie's boyish manners with Avon's coolness and reserved. His calm demeanor is starkly different from her impulsive physical reactions and blood-thirstiness. I also liked how he was able to defeat the villain without intimidating him or chasing after him. Instead, he used insinuation.

Another thing that I really liked about this book was how Heyer subtilly highlighted the women's limitations during this time period. Leonie dislikes trading in her breeches for layers of skirts and petticoats, she refuses to ride side-saddle, and is always shooting at villains to death (even though it's a dangerous job). While Avon is a little discomfitted by her erratic behavior at first, he soon realizes that he loves her.

It was a little difficult to keep track of at first, as Heyer calls the Duke by different names in the first few pages. Once you get it figured out, it becomes much easier to read. The book was amazing and I would highly recommend it. If you're a fan Georgette Heyer or just enjoy the romance of a good book I can assure you that you won't be disappointed!

Avon's Relationship to Davenant

He does not try to make her jealous of his bond with Leonie but he gently reminds her to be more careful about her relationships in the near future.
