Avon Books - A Brief History

Avon Publications was founded in 1941 by the American News Company as a paperback publisher. The company started by focusing on comics, but then expanded to other genres, such as romance.

Avon Publications

Avon was a mass-market company and published westerns, mysteries and romances that had attractive covers. Their books were cheaper than the more expensive Pocket books, avon Book April and were aimed at housewives, who could read in between cooking and cleaning.

Avon published digest-format paper (the size of magazines for short stories today) in series such as Murder Mystery Monthly, Avon Fantasy Reader and many others. These publications featured authors that are sought-after by collectors today, including A. Merritt, James M. Cain and H. P. Lovecraft.

Avon sold over 20 million books a year in the mid-1950s. Their 25-cent "G" series included the popular genres of westerns, whodunits, and the boy-meets girl stories that were so prevalent in the era of the boy-meets-girl stories. Avon also had a 35 cent "T" series which included the usual suspects like science fiction, mystery, and other similar genres.

In its beginning, the company's focus on gaining popularity led it to publish fantasies and ghost stories as well as sexually explicit love stories. These were far from the more literary Pocket competition. In 1959, Avon was bought by the Hearst Corporation and the focus was shifted to more mainstream literature.

Avon is today the biggest women's beauty and fiction business worldwide with representation on every continent. They also have offices in over 100 countries. Avon is a top publisher of Sunday Times and Kindle bestsellers with a focus on thrillers, crime suspense, uplifting general fiction and saga. The company is proud to have an eminent female history and has helped pave the way for women entrepreneurs all over the globe. It is a pioneer in sales, marketing and innovation.

Avon Impulse

Founded in 1941, Avon was initially an e-book publisher and comic book publisher. They later focused on romance novels. Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams founded the company. Meyers employed sisters and brothers to work for the company. He wanted to create an alternative to Pocket Books. They made this happen by printing cheap paperbacks with an appeal to the masses, with stunning cover designs.

Avon reached its peak as a publisher of romance novels in the 1970s. The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, a sexy novel that spent 33 weeks at the top of the New York Times bestsellers list and was released. Rosemary Rogers' sexy novels, Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies, were also published. This was the first time that one novel was a top seller in this genre.

Hearst Corporation purchased the company in 1959. Hearst concentrated on the romance offerings of the company, causing it to become one of the top publishers in this genre. The company continued to release inexpensive paperbacks on popular themes such as westerns and whodunits. However, the emphasis on romance helped increase their profit.

Avon still publishes romance novels. Avon Impulse is a digital imprint that publishes both ebooks and paperbacks. The imprint is open to submissions that are unagented from amateur authors. It also lets authors test their limits without worrying about the publishing industry's reaction.

Throughout the 1970s, Avon continued to dominate the romance industry. The 1970s saw the rise of lurid cover artwork and the bodice-ripping. Avon published a group of writers dubbed Love's Leading Ladies. This group included Kathleen Woodiwiss and Rosemary Rogers. Johanna Lindsey, Laurie McBain, and Johanna Lindsey were also part of this group of writers.

Avon and Harper Collins merged in 1999. Avon's non-romance hardcover and paperback collections were transferred to Morrow, the sister imprint of Harper Collins. This meant that there was no longer Avon publishing romance novels. Eventually, the publishing house was changed to Avon Books and today is still a vital part of the HarperCollins family. The catalog now includes more than just classic romances, but also women's literature and sagas.
