Having the right tools available is critical when in the field. This kit was designed with this in mind and contains all of the basic hand tools required to repair items in the field. The tools are made of metal and have the smallest amount of plastic, so they can be used in a variety of ways. The kit includes a zippered canvas pouch for the coalcracker's tools, a twist awl, reamer and cutting shears and gimlets (5MM). It also includes a bottle of coalcracker oil with illustrated instructions and a wooden spool an reamer, and a twisted awl.

Repair Patches

You might want to consider adding adhesive patches to your kit if there are some holes in your equipment. These heavy-duty patches have a high-performance glue pre-applied on a tough polyurethane back which allows a tear caused by pressure to heal. These patches are available in clear or colored versions and provide durability against punctures as well as sunlight, water, saltwater and temperature extremes.

If your kit doesn't include any of the items above it is possible to consider adding a water-proof Aquaseal wader sealant. This water-tight glue will adhere to metals and fabrics to create an unbreakable fix. It's ideal for repairs to drysuits and may be applied while on the job. Allow the sealant to set for at least 12 hours prior to applying the repaired gear.

The essential field fabric kit for tents, packs, and rainwear made of silicone-impregnated nylon. This kit includes one Clean Tape repair patch as well as a sil-nylon swatch. Also included is a 1/4 ounce of Gore-Tex Repair Adhesive and Sealant Brush for sealing. To apply the patch, place it on a smooth, clean surface of the damaged area with at least 1/2 inch overlap. Release the paper and rub the adhesive side down with moderate finger pressure.

Surface preparation is essential for successful repairs. Sunblock, Rep kit acetone, or oils on shoes and boots can alter adhesion. For best results, make use of Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed curing to two hours.

Adhesive patches

These patches with adhesive are ideal for those who don't wish to stay in the waiting room until they can get back on the trail. Apply the self-adhesive patch then roll it on.

Thoroughly clean the punctured area, then apply the tube-scuffer, or sandpaper to roughen the surface which helps glue stick. Spread a thin layer of glue on the patch that covers an area at least as large as the patch. Take a few moments for the glue to turn tacky before pressing the patch down and holding it securely in the place.

This kit comes with two adhesive-backed, clear Tenacious Tape fabric repair patches. It also comes with one quarter ounce of Seam Grip urethane sealant and repair adhesive. Ideal for strengthening damaged tents, sleeping bags, rep kit rainwear, packs and boots.
