Re:Nylon

The material that is recycled is the result of a partnership with Aquafil which is a textile yarn manufacturer in Italy which produces Econyl fabric made from recycled nylon waste. The fabric can be reused many times without losing its quality. It's part of a wider initiative to transition from virgin nylon to re:Nylon across the entire Prada portfolio by 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. In addition to the six new Re:Nylon bags, the range also includes a pair of shoes and boots made from repurposed ECONYL, as well as a range of apparel in the same fabrication.

To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to produce the series of videos known as "What We Carry" that shows the cutting-edge process that goes into creating Re:Nylon bags. The first video is a collaboration between Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, as well as National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling plant in Arizona which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's move to re-Nylon is the largest reduction in virgin nylon yet. It will save 70,000 barrels of crude oil per year. The move will also reduce the company's carbon emissions by approximately 57,000 tonnes. It's the latest sustainability effort from the brand which recently made it fur-free on its clothing and accessories, which was applauded by both environmentalists and animal rights activists alike.

Recycled Nylon

While it may be better for the environment than nylon, recycled nylon still has its own drawbacks. It's not biodegradable, and will remain in landfills or in the oceans until it is broken down into smaller particles which can harm wildlife. The fabric may also shed microplastics after washing. It requires 50 percent less energy than regular nylon and is more durable.

The fabric is a mixture of waste petroleum and plastics, which comes from fossil fuels. This reduces both the need for more natural resources and the carbon emissions resulting from the production of virgin nylon. It is also more manageable than other bag fabrics, as it doesn't need to be dyed and woven. This makes it a great option for bags that will be used regularly for gym or yoga gear.

In addition to its environmental advantages, recycled nylon is a stronger and more flexible fabric than traditional polyester or cotton.
