Replacement Upvc Window Handles

The majority of replacement windows handles made of upvc come with everything you require. However the handle you had previously was secured with pins or screws they will need to removed. Remove the'snap-in' covers at the base of your handle.

Espag

Espag handles are a type of multipoint locks designed to fit on casement windows like uPVC or wooden double glazing. They have a 7mm square spindle which fits into the gearbox on a uPVC window and when the handle is turned, it triggers an array of locks around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles, also referred as shootbolts, give more security than the single point lock that is found on older window frames.

They are available in a variety of different designs, including inline and cranked handles that can be used either left or right-hand operation. You can even find various ergonomically designed handles that are designed to enhance the feel of the handle and how it looks on your windows.

You will need to measure the size of the spindle from base of your uPVC handle in order to order the correct replacement. This measurement, also known as the step height will help you select the perfect uPVC window handle for your home.

You may have to remove any screw covers which protect the screws that hold the handle in place, and if this is the case, you can use a screwdriver or pliers to break the pins that hold the handle. After this is done then you must take the handle apart by removing the screw or pins that hold the spindle and then pulling it away from the window.

Once the handle is removed, you will then be able to access the locking mechanism within the frame of the window and remove the cockspur wedge block that is attached to the handle in order to allow the window to open. The new uPVC handles you ordered should be able to slide onto the cockspur block, and then into handle spindle to allow the window to be opened again. If you want to make sure that your uPVC handles are properly secured, it's best to replace the cockspur block with a brand new one.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are found on older uPVC or aluminum windows. The handle is turned and then closes on a plastic wedge shaped receiver catch (not to be confused with timber window latches that are also covered in this section). The handles are available in lockable and nonlockable models. They are available in a variety of different nose sizes to match the existing frame.

The handle is secured by a small triangle-shaped spur (spur) which is fixed to the frame. These are usually single-way handles, but the deadlock that locks is a possibility to add additional security.

The replacement handles for cockspurs are easy to put in. All you require is the correct backset and a new set (supplied). The backset is measured from the baseplate to the underside nose of the handle. Aluminium window frames are usually 9mm wide, whereas UPVC is 21mm wide. There are a variety of other options however it is essential to take a measurement before purchasing the handle (see video below for how).

This type of window handle can be replaced by unscrewing the current handle and then removing the spindle, or in certain instances, the entire handle assembly. The new handle will then be screwed into place with the help of pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screw is available in a brass or replacement windows a zinc finish to match the existing hardware. There is also a choice for a self-locking pozidriv screw.

This is an easy to install cockspur handle replacement that is perfect for fixing or replacing old uPVC windows. They have an universal design that makes them suitable for most profiles and backsets. Each handle is equipped with three packers, each having different thicknesses. They are installed on the underside of the handle noses and can be used together to achieve backsets as small as 9mm or as high as 21mm. They are available in left and right handed versions and come in nonlockable or lockable models, with a variety of nose heights.

Turn and Tilt

The top European window style of tilt and turn has been around in Europe for a long time, but it's just now beginning to catch on in the Americas. The windows are a combination of 3 window styles - tilt, in-swing and pivot. This makes them perfect for older homes as they can offer more airflow than standard window styles.

When tilt and turn windows are closed, they lock like any other fixed window. By turning the handle 90@ or 180@ (depending on the type of tilt and turn window) the window sash will open inwards and the window will tilt into allowing air to circulate through the space at the top of the frame. This is a great solution to allow ventilation without having to open a large window which can be a safety risk if not properly secured when opening.

Spade

There's also tilt and turn handles blade or spade handles and monkey tail handles. The type of handle you select will depend on the style you prefer and the kind of windows you have.

You must know the way your current handle is attached to the frame to choose the right replacement upvc handle.
