The sash is an interior frame that is vertically moved up or down in windows that are open. This article will teach you how to do simple repairs to sash.

Weather Stripping

Wood window sashes add a classic aesthetic to your home and, when properly maintained, can last for many years. They may, however, get damaged or deteriorated over time due to exposure or normal wear. However, sash repair experts can restore your windows back to their original condition and maintain their appearance for much longer than newer replacement windows.

The first step for repair sash window damage is to fix weather stripping, which is found on both the sash and frame. It can cause drafts if it's damaged or is loose. To fix it, begin by determining your window's brand and the date on which the glass was manufactured (etched in the corner of the glass or on the aluminum spacer between panes). Remove the sash and mark its width and height so that you can find a new weather stripping that is compatible with the original.

Then, take the sash from its holder, and place it on flat surfaces to allow you to see all four sides. If your sash has a double-hung, you'll need to remove the weights and the ropes that go with them that should have fallen into the intended pocket in the jamb liner. After you've removed the sash using a utility knife, you can use it to cut off the old weather stripping at the corners, and then remove it manually or with a putty knife.

Once the sash has been cleaned, you can replace the parting stops. These are long pieces wood that separate the two sashes. Pam prefers the standard 1/2-inch by 3/4 inch window trimming from the lumberyard. However, you could also substitute for a scrap piece of lumber.

After removing the stopper and trimming it to length after which, apply a thin layer of glazing compound on the bottom of the sash. Smooth the compound with your putty knife, and then let it dry for at least a day. When it's completely dried, apply a top coat of acrylic latex paint. This will help protect the putty, and give your sash a modern appearance.

Sash Hardware

The hardware that supports windows sashes can become worn out over time and with use. This can result in the window or door that is difficult to open or close. It's good to know that replacing or repair of this hardware is typically straightforward and cost-effective. If you are having trouble opening the sash, spray some oil into the jamb channel. Then, slide the sash out to see if it resolves the problem. If the problem persists it's most likely the sash balance. You'll need to take off the window sash in order to reach this hardware.

Ideally, window sashes should be able to open and close with minimal effort however, this can be an issue when the weights are worn or if the sash meeting rail isn't properly coated. This can be due to various reasons that include an absence of maintenance or a mismatched weight rating.

If the hinge arms on the window begin to move, this could cause the sash to drag and then hit the frame at the opposite corner (Photo 1). To fix this issue, first make sure the sash is squarely inserted into the opening of the frame and then remove it from the window. If the sash was screwed onto the hinge arm, take it off the hinge and replace it. (Photo 2). Then, you can install the new sash (Photo 3).

Old windows, particularly those in older homes, may be difficult to open and close, due to sagging hinges and general lack of energy efficiency. In most instances, a few minor repairs can turn these windows into smooth operators again and save the homeowner cash on energy costs.

It is crucial to have the tools you require before you begin. Begin by marking the location of the hinge channel on the frame using a pencil (Photo 1). This will allow you to get the channel back into the correct position after you've finished. Remove the sash, and then remove the hardware including the beads that separate (Photo 2) and the cords or chains that secure it. The nozzle shield of the heat gun and a medium setting will soften any hardened glue. Remove the old sash, and put it in a bag labeled.

Sash Weights

Whether your window sash repairs are to replace a broken cord or to keep your windows functioning and functional, replacing worn-out sash weights will improve sash operation and reduce energy costs. Sash weights are hefty lead or iron cylinders enclosed inside a hidden compartment and linked to the moveable window sash using rope. They function as counterbalances and allow you to open and close the window without the need for mechanical or electrical devices. When they fail, sashweights are usually neglected or not used by homeowners.

A weight from a sash that fell out of the cavity is difficult to retrieve, so you will want to find a new one that fits correctly. You will also require a new piece of string, a length of sashcord and some sashpulleys to tie the weights you are replacing to the cord.

Older wood windows are joined by mortise and tenon joints. The wood pegs holding the components together can be removed by the use of a pin punch and hammer. The majority of these pegs are large on one side and smaller on the other. It is crucial to first remove the smaller diameter sides. Sashes that were made later in the century used glue instead of pegs. Sash Cords

A new sash cable can restore the ability to raise and lower the sash, and ensure it stays in place when it is opened.

To replace sash cords, the first step is to remove the access panels from the jambs. They are usually nailed or screwed in and will need to be removed or relocated. It is possible to take them out using the hammer or chisel but it is always best to lay out dust sheets before starting any work.

Once the access panel is removed, you can start working on the sash. Prise the narrow parting beads (also known as "tie rails") out of their grooves with the chisel or flat bar. They are typically wedged into or nailed, but they can be prised free and it's worth your time. If the sash is still in place, pry out the mortise and tenon joints using pin punch and hammer or screwdriver, then remove the wood pegs that are on each piece. The sash should move freely now, but it may need some lubrication to feel less stiff.

Measure the length of sash cord/chain required to reach the sash slot on the bottom from the pulley located at the top of the jamb. Cut the cord/chain and secure it in the step 6 above. You can employ a hammer and screws or nails, however nails are less likely to cause damage.

Unless you've bought an item that replaces the old counterbalance system, it's best to keep the original balancing weights in place. They are not expensive and simple to install if purchased them from architectural salvage stores. Based on the size of your window two or three sash weights may be needed to keep it open.
