After a series of social media posts hinting at it, Italian supercar-maker Lamborghini has finally announced its first NFT (non-fungible token) project. It's called Space Key and developed in collaboration with an unknown artist, it is built on a piece of advanced carbon fiber composite material that was delivered to the International Space Station for research purposes.

It's dubbed the Space Key, it consists of five items that unlock a unique digital artwork NFT by the unidentified artist. The 'collectors piece' was created in collaboration with NFTPRO(tm) and is limited to five units. It is scheduled to be auctioned in the near future.

Each Space Key contains a block composed of a carbon-fire composite material. It was sent to the International Space Station as part of a research project for 2019. After returning to Earth, the block was engraved with QR code that links to the digital element of the Space Key.

Each of the five Space Keys will feature a separate moment that occurs a few seconds apart as the Lamborghini Ultimae lifts off toward the stars. Over 600 million pixels make each of the five images, which were shot by photographer Fabian Oefner.

Oefner used a balloon with a camera that captured each of the individual shots, that were then merged to create the final image. The result is an out-of-this world photograph that captures both the beauty of Earth as well as the futuristic, hyper-realistic look of the car rising away from it. The Space Keys will be auctioned off in the near future, but the exact date and time of the event haven't been set yet.

The auction
