SmartThings requires a hub which isn't inexpensive. Samsung has a number of different options, including the SmartThings Station that you can attach to the router and use as an nightlight. There's a cheaper SmartThings hub dongle that supports Z-Wave, Zigbee and Thread.

Once you've connected your smart fridge to your phone and hub, it is very easy to use. The SmartThings app lets you manage your fridge from any location, with notifications sent to your phone whenever it's closed or opened. You can create schedules to set the temperature, and even create reminders.

SmartThings was a founding member in the Home Connectivity Alliance. This alliance is working towards making major home appliances made by different manufacturers compatible. In the near future you can control your Samsung washer/dryer, Electrolux oven, and LG TV using the same app.

Although it's not as widely supported as Alexa or Google Assistant, SmartThings does have some major players on its roster, including Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. It's compatible with Matter protocol which allows for accessories to be connected regardless of brand. The best option for most users is to combine Alexa and Google Assistant.

This refrigerator freezer is the most modern that you can buy. It features a 21-inch touchscreen built into the door and a number of clever features. This could change with the release of more software updates, but for now these models are ideal for those who wish to have the most extensive connected refrigerator they can get. You can save money by purchasing one without the Family Hub if you're not one of those people. If you own a variety of smart home appliances that you want to control with one screen, or if you are awed by the idea of having a fridge with a huge touchscreen, it could be worth the money.
