What is a Defra Approved Stove?

A defra-approved stove is a wood burning stove that has been inspected and approved by the UK Government's Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. This allows stoves to be used in Smoke Control Areas in the UK.

Defra, an English government department, is responsible for the environment, food production standards, agriculture and a thriving rural economy. Defra also has solid protocols to deal with notifiable diseases.

Approved by Defra

Defra approved stoves, also referred as Defra smoke exempt stoves are wood burning and defra Stoves installation multi fuel stoves that satisfy the emission standards of the government for use in Smoke Control Areas. The new standards don't bar wood stoves from being used in smoke control areas, but they do restrict the amount of smoke generated by the stoves.

APHA can also retest the effectiveness of a product at any time. This can be done without the need to submit samples, and the results will be then added to the approved disinfectants list.

Approved for Smoke Control Areas

Many parts of the UK are classified as Smoke Control Areas, meaning you are only allowed to burn fuels that are approved or appliances that are exempt from being used. This is done to reduce the pollution of the air caused by burning fuels that are not authorised that produce ash and smoke that is nuisance. To avoid violating the law or being penalized, you must burn wood logs using a DEFRA-approved stove, fire, or fireplace. If the stove is marked with the DEFRA logo then you know that the stove is Defra approved to be used in smoke-free zones and is able to burn wood in these areas. You will still need to install an appropriate chimney liner However, the smaller 5kW stoves are generally simpler and less expensive to install than larger models as they can be used with a 5" twin wall stainless steel liner instead of the standard 6" liner.

You could be eligible for an authorization from your local authority if don't own a DEFRA-approved stove. This permits you to burn fuels that are not approved in your home. You'll need to look on the DEFRA site to see whether an exemption is available. There are other rules to follow like installing a smoke alarm. It is also important to note that if you have an open fire, barbecue or garden chiminea, you will have to adhere to the same rules as Smoke Control Areas.
