Each DU features a 10-bit ADC that analyzes the actual current using a shunt resistance (2 kO) that is connected to the DSU serial shunt out. This stops the DSU from producing more current than it is supposed to, which can result in burn-out or damage.

A communication board that is based on the Uno format sends requests for applications to a DSU to enable it execute a specific stimulation sequence. The CU initiates local operating mode after sending a configuration request that defines a standard pattern of pulses, the pulse intensity and pulse width to the DSU.

The DSU initiates the pulse patterns for each channel. The output current is then measured at the DSU shunt resistor in order to ensure that it does not exceed the limit specified. This safety feature ensures the DSU will not deliver more current than is intended, which is crucial to protect human subjects.
