Avon Books - A Brief History

In 1941 the American News Company (ANC) created Avon Publications as a paperback book publisher. It began with a focus on comics, but then changed to include a variety of genres, particularly romance.

Avon is now owned by HarperCollins, which also owns Harlequin. Their Diamond Anniversary celebration is underway.

Avon Publications

Avon Books was a major competitor to the more literary Pocket Book Company in the beginning of the paperback publishing industry. Avon published westerns, romances and mysteries with vibrant covers. Their books were cheaper than Pocket books, and were aimed at housewives who could read between cooking and cleaning.

Avon published digest-format paper (the size of magazines for short stories today) in series such as Murder Mystery Monthly, Avon Fantasy Reader and koreafurniture.com many others. These editions contain many authors that are prized today by collectors. They include A. Merritt and James M. Cain as well as H. P. Lovecraft.

In the mid-1950s Avon was selling over 20 million books per year. The 25-cent "G series featured popular genres like westerns, whodunits, and boy-girl stories. Avon also had 35 cents "T" series that featured the standbys of mystery, science fiction and other genres.

The company's emphasis on popularity led them to publish ghost stories, sexually suggestive love stories, and fantasy novels in the early days that were a far cry from the somewhat more literary Pocket competition. In 1959, Avon became part of the Hearst Corporation. The focus changed to more mainstream literature.

Today, Avon is the world's largest female-focused beauty and fiction company with representatives across five continents and more than 100 countries. They are a leading publisher of Sunday Times and Kindle bestsellers with a focus on thrillers, crime suspense, uplifting general fiction and saga. The company is proud of its female-centric roots and opened the door for female entrepreneurs across the world. It is a global leader in sales, marketing and innovation, and is making an impact in communities around the globe.

Avon Impulse

Founded in 1941, Avon began as an e-book publisher and comic book publisher. Later, they specialized in romance novels. The company was created by Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams. Meyers recruited sisters and brothers to run the company. He wanted to create a rival to Pocket Books. They made this happen by printing cheap paperbacks that had an appeal to the masses, with stunning cover designs.

In the 1970s, Avon was at its peak as a romance book publisher. The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, a sexy novel that spent 33 weeks at the top of the New York Times bestsellers list, was published. Rosemary Rogers' sexy novels, Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies, were also published. These were the first instances that a single novel was the top of the charts for this genre.

The company was bought by Hearst Corporation in 1959. Hearst focused on the romance offerings of the company, causing it to become one of the largest publishers of this genre. The company continued to release inexpensive paperbacks with popular themes like westerns and whodunits. However, the focus on romance helped increase their profit.

Avon still publishes romance novels. The company recently launched a digital imprint called Avon Impulse, which publishes ebooks and paperbacks. The imprint is open to submissions from amateur writers who are not represented by an agent. Authors are able to explore their creativity without worrying about the reaction of the publishing industry.

Avon Impulse offers a 25 percent royalty on the first 10,000 downloads, and then a 50 percent royalty on each subsequent sale. The publisher edits the book and creates the cover, which is sexy. The book is available in ePub and Kindle formats, as well.

Avon Women's Fiction

Johanna Lindsey, Laurie McBain, and Johanna Lindsey were also part of this stable.

In 1999, Avon merged with Harper Collins. Avon's hardcover and non-romance paperback series were transferred to the imprint of Harper Collins' sister company Morrow, leaving Avon as a publisher of romance novels. Eventually, the publishing house was renamed Avon Books and today is still an important part of the HarperCollins family. The catalog is now more than just classic romances, but also women's literature and sagas.

Avon Paranormal
