All Round Cooling employs an All Round Cooling cooling plate at the back of the refrigerator to retain cold air and stop its loss when you open the door. It also reduces the need for power-defrosting which saves time and money.

The ice dispenser that comes with Samsung fridges is one of the best we've ever tested. The original Twist Ice Maker dispensing large cubes is operated with a simple twist and can be kept below the fridge when not being used. This allows for more shelf space, and makes it easier to locate your preferred drinks and snacks.

You can choose which way your freezer and fridge are opened with Reversible Doors. This allows you to easily fit your fridge into the kitchen layout, while also keeping your fridge neat and tidy.

Samsung's Family Hub is the central control for your SmartThings-connected home. It has a large touchscreen mounted on your refrigerator. It will show live video from your smart doorbell, order groceries using an automated inventory or suggest recipes that make use of the items you have on hand.

Samsung refrigerators have drawers that flex at the bottom, which are an intelligent storage solution. They allow you to store taller items such as pizza trays, and cans of drinks. The fridge comes with an external water and ice dispenser to make it even more efficient.

It's a nice-looking fridge that has an upper-right FlexZone compartment that converts from refrigerator to freezer. This allows you to keep things like bags of frozen vegetables, meat, or fish in the freezer. It was a great performer in our tests too, but the lack of voice control and SmartThings integration on the 21.5-inch touchscreen felt like a missed opportunity.

The rest of the fridge is full of room to store food items, including two crisper trays as well as an upper FlexZone drawer that can be customized. The latter lets you choose between five different settings for the fridge freezer drawer depending on your preferences. There is the freeze setting that is compatible with the freezer settings as well as an option for a soft freeze setting on wine or deli tray, a meat or fish setting, and the beverage setting for drinks, snacks and other items that are frequently accessed.

This Samsung FlexZone side by side refrigerator is ideal for families who want to have a fridge and freezer in one unit. It's not as big as high-end French-door models, but it does come with a number of useful features. This is a good choice for those with little space in their homes.

SmartThings

SmartThings isn't as popular a platform that Alexa and Google Assistant are but it does come with a lot of smart devices that you can add. Samsung's TVs, phones, refrigerators, and tablets all have SmartThings. It could be enough for some people, especially if they have multiple Samsung products.

The SmartThings application is very refined and fridge freezer samsung well-rounded, with a 'if x then y' automation section that works surprisingly well. You can set up things such as an alarm that goes off when sensors detect a flooding or turning on the light when your phone detects you're in your home. It can also control your refrigerator by connecting it to a smart plug, although we've seen mixed results with this.

You'll need a hub in order to use SmartThings, which isn't inexpensive. Samsung makes a few different models, including the SmartThings Station, which you can connect to your router, and can be used as an nightlight. There's a cheaper SmartThings hub dongle, which supports Z-Wave, Zigbee and Thread.

Once you've connected your smart fridge to your phone and hub, it's very easy to use. SmartThings lets you manage your refrigerator from anywhere. Notifications are sent to your phone when the fridge is opened or closed. You can set up schedules, change the temperature and even set reminders.

SmartThings was one of the founding members of the Home Connectivity Alliance. This alliance is working towards making the most important home appliances from various manufacturers compatible. In the near future you can control your Samsung washer/dryer, Electrolux oven, and LG TV from the same application.

SmartThings is not as popular as Alexa or Google Assistant but it does include some major names on its list, such as Arlo Nest, Belkin, and Lifx. Bixby, Samsung's voice-activated assistant that allows users to access entertainment apps, create notes for your family (think of it as a large digital version of the notepad stuck to the refrigerator) as well as check weather reports and a lot more.

The touchscreen also allows you to organize your food and recipes, with the ability to add ingredients straight from the recipe app and also see what's in your fridge through internal cameras. You can also create shopping lists on the go and keep track of foods to know when they'll expire. You can also use an app for recipe reading to read the recipe while cooking.

This is the second generation of Family Hub fridges and Samsung claims it has spent a year fine-tuning them based on customer feedback. You can now create separate profiles for every member of your family to allow them to customize the information and apps that they can access. It's not as great as having Alexa integration built into your fridge but it's an improvement on last year's model.

In addition to its ability to manage grocery and entertainment, Family Hub also acts as an interface for Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can be integrated into Matter-compatible devices, such as lights or plugs, and you can use the touchscreen to control them.

Samsung's fridge is only a couple of years old and even though it has plenty of features, its touchscreen smarts are not a feature that many people would consider to be an essential feature. They're more of a fun and semi-frivolous feature than anything else.

This could be changed with the release of more software updates, but for the moment these models are ideal for those who wish to have the most complete connected refrigerator possible. If you aren't one of them, you can pick up a cheaper model without the Family Hub to save some cash. If you own a variety of smart home devices you need to manage from a single screen, or if you are awed by the idea of a refrigerator with a giant touchscreen, it could be worth the cost.
