Few historians have been as kind to corporations as Manko has been to Avon, and she shows how even a successful business can be plagued by blind spots, slow responses poor decisions, and ineffective management. Her meticulous research and shrewd understanding of business operations will be a surprise to many readers.

Avon is difficult to rank in terms of its importance in the growth and development of the romance genre. However it's certainly up there with Mills & Boon, Harlequin and other major publishers. They invented the bodice ripper and created a stable of authors which included Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers and a host of others. The covers became more lurid and the heroines started to have more sexual experience than simply sleeping with hero.

Avon also published a variety of science fiction and fantasy. They published it in digest format, about the size and shape of an modern short story magazine which made them extremely popular. Collectors love a few of these.
