Glazing Repair - How to Repair a Cracked Window

Glazing can make a huge difference to the energy efficiency of your home. This is especially true for older double-glazed windows.

While it is possible to replace glazing points while the window is still in place, it's quicker and easier to do so if the frame and glass are removed. It is a good time to replace the rubber seals.

Broken Glass

Cracked windows are not only unsightly but can also let valuable sunlight and heat to escape your home. Fortunately, it's often possible to repair a damaged window pane without having to go through a full replacement.

Wear safety glasses and gloves. You can also apply duct tape or upvc repairs painter's tape to make an "X" on the glass you plan to remove. This will stop any broken glass from falling onto your work surface as you work.

Cover a small crack on your window with tape to keep water, insects and wind from getting. One strip of tape should be enough for superficial cracks however if you're concerned about the weather getting worse before you can replace your window, use a more durable plastic cover like a tarp or trash bag, to hold the glass in place until you get a permanent fix.

Make use of a strong adhesive specifically designed for windows to fix cracks. Loctite Super Glue Glass is a great choice. When the frame is complete, take measurements for the new window pane. Then purchase it from a home improvement store or other retailer. Be sure to purchase the pane one-sixth inch shorter in every direction than the measurement to allow for an ideal fit.

Installing the new window is easier than it sounds, but make sure you follow the directions of the manufacturer to ensure correct fit and a long life for your replacement pane. Use a wire brush to clear the frame of old paint or wood gunk. then sand it to bare wood in order to enhance the seal between the sash and frame.

When you are putting the new window in place, use the point of your putty knife to gently place the window on the frame of wood. Then, press glazier's points into the frame about every six inches to hold the new window firmly in the frame.

After the frame has cure, you can coat the new joint with several coats of paint to match the rest of the frame. Let the paint dry completely before moving on to cleaning and maintaining your window.
