SmartThings

SmartThings isn't quite the platform that Alexa and Google Assistant are however it does offer a lot of smart devices that you can add. It's also baked into Samsung smartphones televisions, tablets, and tablets as well as some fridges. That may be enough to justify it for some, particularly when you own multiple Samsung products.

The SmartThings app is a bit elegant and well-rounded and comes with a 'if x then y' automation section that is surprisingly effective. You can set up things such as an alarm going off when water leak sensors detect the presence of a flood, or turn on a light when your phone detects that you're at home. It can even control your refrigerator by connecting it to a smart outlet, however we've had mixed results with this.

You'll need a hub to use SmartThings, which isn't inexpensive. Samsung has a range of ones - including the SmartThings Station, which you can attach to your router and uses as an nightlight. There's also a less expensive SmartThings hub dongle that supports Z-Wave, Zigbee and Thread.

Once you have your smart fridge, smartphone and hub connected it's easy to use. The SmartThings app lets you control your fridge from any location with notifications sent to your phone whenever it's opened or closed. You can set up schedules, change the temperature, and even set reminders.

SmartThings is an early member of the Home Connectivity Alliance, which is working to make major appliances in the home from a variety of manufacturers interoperable. In the near future, you could control your Samsung washer/dryer, Electrolux oven, and LG TV using the same application.

SmartThings isn't as popular as Alexa or Google Assistant but it does include some major names on its list, like Arlo Nest, Belkin, and Lifx. It's compatible with the Matter protocol that allows accessories to be paired regardless of the brand. The best option for most people is to pair Alexa and Google Assistant.

Family Hub

A fridge freezer can't get much more modern than this: it has an LCD display of 21 inches inside the door, and comes with a variety of intelligent features. Bixby, Samsung's voice-activated assistant that allows users to access entertainment apps, create notes for your family (think of it as a huge digital version of the notepad attached to the refrigerator) as well as check weather reports and much more.

The touchscreen lets you manage recipes and food. You can add ingredients from an app and check out the contents of your fridge with internal cameras. Samsung's refrigerator is a few years old and even though it offers a wide range of functions, its touchscreen smarts are not a feature that majority of people would consider essential. They're more of a fun and semi-frivolous feature than anything else.

This may be changed with the release of more software updates, but at present these models are ideal for those who want to have the most extensive connected refrigerator they can get. You could save money by purchasing an appliance without the Family Hub if you're not one of these people. This could be worth it when you have a number of smart home appliances that must be controlled via the same screen or if you simply love the idea of refrigerators with a huge touchscreen.
