1. iRobot s8

This smart robot vacuum and mop combination is a fantastic option for a wide range of homes. It is able to vacuum and mop well, has excellent navigation with both GPS and laser sensors and has a wide range of features and controls available via the app. It also comes with a useful feature that allows you to add Cleaning zones for certain areas that require extra attention, as well as Keep Out zones where you do not want it to go. As with all Roomba devices, it receives new software updates that make it even better over time.

It's expensive but it's also among the most advanced robot vacuums that ZDNet has evaluated. It's got a huge battery that can sweep an entire home in less than two hours. It also switches between mopping and vacuuming with the touch of the button. And unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, this one automatically emptys itself into the larger waste container that is above its charging dock.

It also has many other features, including intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses cameras in conjunction with processor-powered smarts in order to identify obstacles. It is rarely derailed or stuck during a cleaning process. In my tests it was the most effective at avoiding objects such as power cables. It's not as reliable in detecting pet waste, or other dangers.

2. Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid

While the Anker-owned Eufy has made a name for itself in the field of low-cost robot vacuums, it hasn't previously offered an all-in-one model which can also mop. This is changing with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive suite of advanced features and can compete well with more expensive models.

The most significant selling point for Eufy with this machine is its laser navigation. The X8 makes use of the laser mapping system, which is more accurate than the previous Eufy devices. It takes less time to build a comprehensive map of your home. It can also store multiple maps. This is perfect for multi-floored homes.

The X8 is a great vacuum cleaner for floors that are clean. It is able to easily throw debris through the side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin. The X8's tyres, despite their circular shape, are adept at grabbing corners and edges. Our tests showed that it was able to remove 90 percent of the fur from hard floors.

Awarded for its quiet and efficient home appliances, Miele's RX2 robot vacuum comes with outstanding cleaning power, stunning design, and a great navigation. However, it does have some operational hiccups that keep it from ranking as the best overall smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 comes with a dual-sensor mapping technology that uses a LIDAR to map an area and a pair of 3D scanning cameras to detect and eliminating obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once mapped, the app lets you create virtual no-go zones as well as favorite sections that the robot will clean automatically. You can also alter the cleaning options, begin an automatic clean, or view live feeds of the cameras onboard from the main screen.

The RX2 is equipped with excellent sensors that can identify furniture and other obstructions in a flash. The suction and sweeping capabilities are exceptional, removing surface litter from carpets with medium pile and also removing embedded dust on bare floors. It's not the most powerful robot on the market. As with many others, it's not a good climber and is prone to problems with things like thresholds made of metal transition strips.

5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking for a simple, no-frills robot vacuum at a low cost, the Eufy11S might be your best robot vacuum for hardwood floors bet. The model isn't equipped with smart features like Alexa integration and digital mapping that are found in more expensive models. If you don't need these features, you can save money.

Roomba 990 by iRobot

The Roomba is iRobot’s flagship robot vacuum. It's expensive but it's the most powerful robot vacuum you can purchase. Its self-navigation and environmental mapping is something to behold. It has more advanced automation than the majority of its competitors, such as the capability to set up virtual boundary markers through its mobile app. It's a powerful robot vacuum, even though its application is a bit slow and the 980's wheels spin out when rolling over cables.

We love the 980 due to its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors and its visual simultaneity localisation and mapping (or vSLAM) to remember your home's floor plan. It uses this information to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path through each cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient vacuum than the majority of high-end robot vacuums.

Other features of the 980 include dual multi-surface rubber brushes, which grab dirt from hard floors and carpet and an ejector brush that moves debris into the bin of the robotic vacuum. Its floor tracking sensor helps it navigate around furniture, along edges and up steps. Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling. It will also return to the base station for easy recharging in between sessions. Although the 980's battery lifespan and bin size aren't as good as those of other robot vacuums it's a solid and reliable machine that will keep your floors spotless for hours at a time.
