The slot is a great option for wideouts who are fast, as they can get open more easily when their route won't be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. The last spot on the list includes more possession-based receivers who perform better on short and intermediate routes than deep ones like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy, who will be the Rams main slot receiver this year is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are likely to play a bigger role in downfield targets. Hamler should be able to perform well on short-to-mid routes, given that's exactly what he excelled at in 2021 while playing for the Bills. Hamler could be a great replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The proportion of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to run deep routes. However, it isn't always a reliable indicator of a receiver's abilities since some receivers excel in the slot, but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

For example, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery leads the league in the number of targets per game (4.8) but is only sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets are from outside, Rainbet and it's a challenge to make a first down on a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

On contrary, some receivers excel inside, but struggle on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to only 26% of his boundary routes. This is an enormous difference that shows how much more productive Anderson is when aligned to the slot.

Moreover there is the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). However he also played 51% of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are also excellent. Wide receivers with a high slot grade score touchdowns about the same as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their target distribution when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers than other inside options such as backfield passers and tight ends.

That's why it's interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, because he plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. In fact, he's running a higher number of slot routes than the majority of players on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup advantages for your team and clarify why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he also plays the X position, and makes some big plays on the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this list but he's a very high-graded receiver and is a perfect match for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman, another player who can put up big numbers with targets of both kinds is a further example. He has a very high slot receiver grade and is one of the league's best at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also a great contested-catch threat.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps to date. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a key player in the defensive line. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is a result of playing alongside unsafe linebackers who aren't able to match Hilton's size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
