SmartThings requires a hub, which is not expensive. Samsung offers a variety of models, including the SmartThings Station, which you can attach to your router and also is used as a nightlight. There's a cheaper SmartThings hub dongle that supports Z-Wave, Zigbee and Thread.

Once you've got your smart fridge connected to your smartphone, hub and fridge it's a breeze to use. The SmartThings app lets you manage your fridge from anywhere, with notifications sent to your phone when it's opened or closed. You can create schedules to set the temperature, and even create reminders.

SmartThings is a founding member of the Home Connectivity Alliance, which is trying to make major appliances in the home from a variety of manufacturers compatible. In the future you could control your Samsung washer/dryer, Electrolux oven, and LG TV through the same application.

While it's not as widely used as Alexa and Google Assistant, SmartThings does have a few big hitters on its list that include Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. It's also compatible with Matter, an open protocol that allows devices to connect regardless of brand. For the majority of people, however, merged Alexa and Google Assistant voice controls is probably the best option.

Samsung's fridge is only a few years old and even though it has a lot of functionality however, its touchscreen capabilities are not a feature that majority of people would consider an essential feature. They're more fun and a bit of frivolous extras than any other feature.

This could change when there are more software updates, but at present these models are ideal for those who wish to have the most extensive connected refrigerator they can get. If you're not one of those, you could opt for a less expensive model without the Family Hub to save some money. If you have a lot of smart home devices that you need to manage from a single screen, or you like the idea of having a fridge with a huge touchscreen, it could be worth the money.
