Contrary to earlier models, modern Saab automobiles use a transponder on the key-fob instead physical key to unlock and start the vehicle. The rechargeable batteries contained in the key-fob eventually expire, and they can't hold any charge. This is especially true if you keep using the same key with the same lock.

A professional locksmith can change the battery with ease. You can also do it yourself if you have the appropriate tools and a bit of patience. The first step involves separating the key-fob. Insert a flathead into the slot that is in the middle of your case. You will need to be careful, as the plastic is thin and can easily be damaged.

Once the case is open, you can prepare the new key by combining the lower half of the old key and the transponder and banana on the new key. This will ensure that the new key is linked to the CIM correctly, which could make a big difference when replacing the primary key for your Saab 9-3.

How to replace the ignition Key in the Saab XC90

It could be time to replace your SAAB key fob if you are having trouble turning the barrel of the lock. Fortunately, the process is rather simple and doesn't need you to visit a dealer. Instead you can complete the process yourself at home by using some basic tools.

You'll first need to prepare the keys for your new car. Before you begin, disable the anti-theft by placing blocks under your rear wheels and releasing your handbrake. Place the key in the ignition and then turn the key to the "on" position. This will activate the accessories, but it will not start the engine. Repeat this process 5 times, and then keep the key in the "on" position.

You'll need to purchase an additional case for your key fob. They are readily available at many auto parts stores and are usually quite affordable. Depending on the model, you could even buy them without electronics.

To open the case simply push the flathead screwdriver into the slot in the middle. After you have split the case, you will have access to all the internal electronic components. To take the electronics out, use a small flathead screwdriver and try to pry them out gently.
