Slot Efficiency

The bottom of the list was filled with more possession-based receivers including Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnson. The two latter two are likely to see a boost in their targets this season, if the Bucs shift them into the slot more frequently however they'll need to improve their scoring on the perimeter to maintain their high standards.

The slot is the ideal option for wideouts that are fast, as they can get open more quickly when their route will not be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list who benefits from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the lowest of the list. They are better in short and intermediate routes rather than in deep areas. Jeudy is a good choice for a sleeper this year since the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are largely expected to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler should be able to be a star in short-to-mid routes, given that's exactly what he did well in 2021 while playing for the Bills. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot can be a good indicator of their ability to run routes that are deep. It's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver’s skill set, as certain receivers excel in the slot and can't play more deep.

For instance, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery is the leader in the league in targets per game (4.8) but is sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets come from outside and it's hard to get a first down when playing an open, deep route.

Some receivers are better at playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to only 26% on boundaries routes. That's a huge improvement and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside the majority of his passes and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However, he also played 51% of his perimeter routes last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are usually more effective when lining up inside, since they are able to get targeted down the field, and often are in one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

On the flip side there are some excellent slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie leads the NFL in forced fumbles, with seven, while Moore has the best tackle-stop efficiency (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by putting his slot to play nickel and dime packages and then shifting him to the outside while playing base defense. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is an enormous asset when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers such as Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are also just as good. As a whole, wide receivers with a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns at roughly the same rate as players who are on the edge. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent in their targets when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers rather than other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers.

That's why it's interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, since he plays slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of them. In actuality the slot receiver is running a higher number of slot routes than the majority of players on this chart. This is a great way to create matchup advantages for your team and helps explain why Lamb is the highest-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

He also plays the X-position, and can make big plays on the outside. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the other players in this ranking however, he's a very high-graded receiver and is a perfect player for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman, another player who puts huge numbers on targets of both kinds, is another example. He's among the best players in the game at catching throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a great contested-catch player.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps to date. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks aligned in the slot, which makes him a valuable part of his team's defense. On the contrary, he's been unable to prevent passes from the outside and has allowed an unfavorable EPA against these kinds of targets. This has been a result of playing alongside poor linebackers and safeties who don't have the same size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
