Self-Empting Robot Vacuums

Having emptying your robot vacuum after each cleaning run can be annoying particularly for those with allergies. The dust and dirt that gets returned to the air each time you empty your vacuum.

Self-emptying bases reduce your exposure to dust by having the robot move debris from the bin on board into a bigger trash bin when it's full.

The Samsung Jet Bot+

Samsung's robot is among the most advanced that we've evaluated and comes with excellent filtration, brilliant navigation and hands-free dustbin emptying. It also features HEPA filtering and can lock in airborne particles to prevent allergies. The top of the device has a rotating brush bar, with soft bristles that can be able to reach into corners that are tight. It also comes with self-cleaning extractors that break hairs to keep them from getting tangled.

When I tested the Jet Bot, it picked up a lot of dirt from my hardwood floors and carpets. It omitted a couple of tiny things in the corner of my dining room and needed to go back over them however, it did a great job overall. In comparison to the Roomba it snuck in the other one in my tests because its side brush was able to reach better on edges and was more efficient in terms of picking up smaller debris.

Samsung Jet Bot can be operated via the SmartThings App and set to clean automatically at times that you prefer. It can also be scheduled to clean specific areas or rooms and can also be used to add virtual no-go zones (and physical ones if you want).

It makes use of LiDAR sensor technology that is similar to the technology utilized by self-driving vehicles to aid in mapping and navigation. A camera is also placed at the front of the device to enable smart object recognition. This is a feature that helps it avoid collisions with furniture or other objects, and to determine the most efficient path between rooms. It can also detect objects it believes are "poop" and make an educated guess.

The SmartThings application lets you easily schedule cleaning times as well as monitor the health of the robot, and keep track of what's happening on a map. The app can be set to alert you when the robot's bin is full. It will then return to its dock to empty itself prior to continuing its cleaning. The 0.3L dustbin is easily cleaned and emptied as it is fully enclosed.

The Roomba iRobot 960 from iRobot

The Roomba is iRobot’s most expensive robot. It also has a handy small feature called CarpetBoost which automatically boosts the power when it detects it's on carpet, which is a nice feature.

Similar to previous Roomba models, this's frame is circular and it has a single opening at the top, which houses the camera. This model is clever due to its camera. It uses the camera to perform VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) by looking for distinct features in a space and then remembering the features. It then compares this information with relative positioning gyro, IMU and wheel odometry data to create a map of the room it's in.

It's a smart system that works well, even on carpets which is where the Roomba has a difficult time. There are other clever features on the 980, for instance the ability to create an annual cleaning schedule and to play a sound that will help you locate your robot. The front of the unit has a big "Clean" which will get your robot vacuum cleaner self emptying started. There are also indicators that indicate when it is charging, connected to Wi-Fi and when the bin is empty.

If you need to clean up a small mess the 980 also comes with an option for spot cleaning that's quite basic, but it's not as thorough in covering area as the more sophisticated alternatives available. If you have wires that pose dangerous to your robot, you can utilize the virtual wall feature to create a wall that will tell it to stay away from them.

The software that comes with the 980 is very easy to use and gives you a visual view of the tasks your robot is performing. You can also create an agenda and play with other settings such as bin capacity and reduced power mode.

The iRobot Roomba 960

The name iRobot is almost synonymous with robot vacuums and the $700 Roomba 960 is somewhere in the middle of the company's extensive lineup. It's less expensive than the top-of-the-line 980, but it has many of the same features. These include the ability to use a camera for navigation and a smartphone application with detailed cleaning maps. It also has Virtual Wall which creates a barrier that the Roomba will not cross.

The 960 performed well, particularly on floors with no. It sucked up a lot of food crumbs, cat litter and tracked in dirt. It also excels in climbing over obstacles such as stair runners and the legs of tables and chairs. It also took in pet fur, but it was unable to handle finer debris, such as baking soda.

One thing that separates the 960 from other Roomba models is that it uses an additional dustbin for large particles that reduces maintenance needs. You can empty it at the push of a button, using the iRobot HOME app or using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant voice commands.

The iRobot HOME App allows you to personalize every cleaning cycle. You can set the number of passes, and choose from different modes such as edge clean, or a full room sweep. It will also send an alert when it's about to empty the dirt container.

The 960 is easy to use and has buttons on top and control options in the iRobot Home app as well as via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It's also easy to maintain and has an indicator at the top that shows battery's lifespan and docking station that automatically transfers debris from the dirt compartment to the garbage bin when you're ready to empty it. The iRobot HOME App also provides you with how-to videos and provide the location of each object it has collected. The 960's battery life isn't the best however it's good enough for most people to run throughout the day without worrying about charging it before sleeping. The iRobot HOME app is available for both iOS and Android devices.

The Roomba 970 from iRobot

If you're looking for a robotic vacuum that can automatically empty its own bin and is compatible with Google Home or Amazon Alexa, the Roomba 970 is worth checking out. It uses the same advanced navigation system as other recent iRobot models and can even detect stairs, something that can be a hassle with other vacuums. It also has a central camera that scans the floor as it moves around and is able to recognize furniture, walls, and other obstacles so that it doesn't run into objects. It can also establish boundaries for the robot with a virtual wall tool.

This model differs from previous models because it uses lithium-ion batteries instead of nickel metal Hydride. It's now running longer between charges and has more endurance when cleaning. It's not as fast as the Shark AI Robot, but it's still pretty quick and can navigate the room without difficulty.

The 970, as with the other models in the 960 series, can be controlled using the iRobot App and connect to the Wi-Fi network without any setup required. It has a small handle on the front that you can press to return it manually to its charger, and a spot-cleaning button allows you to focus on a specific area in your home. The 960 robots utilize the same three-stage procedure as the other iRobot machines, combining the power of agitation and lifting to thoroughly clean your floor and remove dirt.

The 960 works well on carpets that are clean and can pick up a lot of dust, hair, and other debris, thanks to its brushrolls and powerful suction. It has a difficult time with carpets with high pile and will leave some sand in its tunnel. It has a decent-sized dirt storage compartment and can notify you when it's filled, either through the app or by a light that appears on top of the robot. It can also be programmed to clean at a set time, and we had no problem setting this up during our tests.
