Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the lowest of the list. They're more effective on intermediate and short routes, rather than deep areas. Jeudy is a good choice for a sleeper this year as the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are largely expected to play on more downfield targets. Hamler is likely to be a star on intermediate and short-to middle routes, as that's what he did well in 2021 when he played for the Bills. He could be a great replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The amount of snaps receivers take in the slot can be a good indicator for their ability to run routes deep. However, it's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skill set since certain receivers excel in the slot but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

For example For instance, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery leads the league in the number of targets per game (4.8) however, he is sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets are from outside, and it's a challenge to get a first down in a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

Some receivers are better at playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. For example the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps last season, and he completed an astounding 74 percent of his slot routes, compared to just 26% for boundary routes. Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by putting his slot for nickel and dime packages and then shifting him to the outside for base defense. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous advantage when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are equally good. Wide receivers who have high slot grades have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers than to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

That's why it's interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, because he plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of them. In fact, he's running a higher number of routes in the slot than most players listed on this list. This is an excellent way to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the most highly-rated receiver in our system.

Lamb also plays at the X-position and makes big plays on the outside. Lamb isn't as powerful as some of the other players in this list, but he is still a high-graded wide receiver who fits well into the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player who's capable of putting up huge numbers on both kinds of targets. He has a high slot receiver grade and is among the league's best at catching back-shoulder throws, however, he's also a formidable player for contested-catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps to date. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important member of his team's defensive unit. He's struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This has been a result of playing alongside poor linebackers and safeties who don't have the same size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
