Items with the highest velocity receive the most slots, while less popular items are placed farther back in the warehouse.

The distance factor is another crucial element in the slot's efficiency. It measures the amount of space needed to facilitate the pick-to-ship process. The measure takes into account the velocity of the items, as along with their rack placements and the characteristics of handling equipment.

To improve the efficiency of slot machines, it is also important to consider the cost of the change to a particular slot. Managers can assess the costs of a typical change in slot and the impact it has on other aspects of slot efficiency like velocity by analyzing a typical slot.

The two latter two are likely to see an increase in their targets this season if the Bucs move them into the slot more frequently however they'll need to improve their scoring on the perimeter to maintain that high standard.

The slot strategy is the best option for wide receivers who are fast, as they can open up more quickly when their route will not be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list who benefits from more slot time is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable player on intermediate and short routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the lowest of the list. They're better on intermediate and short routes, rather than deep zones. Jeudy will be the Rams principal slot receiver this year, is a sleeper pick. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are likely to play a bigger role in downfield targets. Hamler is likely to excel on intermediate and short-to middle routes, as that's what he excelled at in 2021 when he played for the Bills. Hamler could be a great replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The proportion of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to run deep routes. It's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's abilities since certain receivers excel in the slot but don't play further.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance is the league leader in targets received per game (4.8) However, he's only ranked 6th when it comes to the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets come from outside and it's hard to get a first down in a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

Some receivers are better playing inside, whereas others struggle on the outside. For instance the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps last season, and he ran 74 percent of his slot routes, compared to just 26% on boundary routes. This is a significant difference that shows how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he's aligned with the slot.

Additionally, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines inside on the majority of his passing downs and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). He also played 51% of his perimeter routes and is a pro in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers are typically more effective when lining up inside, as they can get targeted way down the field and frequently find themselves with one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper on the top five spots of our list.

On the other hand, we've got some great slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able to generate pressures in the passing game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore being the most effective tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). Through using McDuffie in the slot when they are running nickel or dime packages, and then placing him on the outside of base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous benefit when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's worth noting that their slot counterparts are also excellent. Wide receivers with a high slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the perimeter. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers compared to other inside options like tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

That's why it's interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 since he plays slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. He's actually running more routes in the slot than most of the players on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup benefits for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season.

Lamb also plays at the X-position and makes big plays outside. Lamb isn't as powerful as some of the other players in this ranking but he is still a high-graded wide receiver who fits well into the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of posting big numbers on both targets. He has a high slot receiving grade and is one of the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also an excellent opponent for contested catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, making him a crucial part of his team's defense. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is the result of playing alongside subpar linebackers and safeties that aren't able to match Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
