It also has a feature called smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to help it identify the areas of your home that need attention and then create a clean route around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a good job of maneuvering around toys placed on the floor or furniture legs that stick out from under things. It also has a camera sensor that will snap the Roomba back to its original position when it begins to drift away from its original location.

iRobot has also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba which do not have bristles, and therefore are more likely to resist knots than earlier models. They're also a bit higher than the older rollers and can better fit under beds and couches with low sides, and they're designed to help this model navigate more easily on varying flooring types.

What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other high-end models, though, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature that utilizes cameras to detect bits of embedded dirt. This is a significant improvement over the previous model that relied on the use of a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover to bounce around the room, and then clean everything three times at different angles.

In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored extremely well on low-pile carpet and also on mid-pile. It did a good job picking up pet hair but had a difficult time with the thick and long best pet mop vacuum hair that was stuck together.

Despite these small shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our top-performing robots, and isn't even nearly as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It still has a lot of features that we'd like to find in a flagship model however it lacks all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration that you'll find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is ready for use right away. After you have removed the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all you need to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, hit its large "Clean" button, and let it get to work. It will return to its dock when it is running out of battery or becomes full of trash. There are also indicator lights on top that show when the bin is empty, when it needs to recharge, or if it loses Wi-Fi.
