Transponder Keys

Instead of flat metal keys that operate mechanically with cuts on the top and bottom transponder (a portmanteau of responder and transmitter) keys are equipped with an electronic microchip within their key heads. When the key is put into a vehicle equipped with transponder tech the chip sends an insignificant message to a receiver located near the ignition switch. If the chip is programmed to send this signal it will trigger the engine to switch on. Transponder chips are made to protect cars from theft and that is why the majority of modern vehicles use them.

During World War II, coded messages were broadcast over radio frequencies in order to determine if an aircraft was friendly or hostile. General Motors created the first transponder key in 1985 for its Corvette. Since then, they've become standard on most new vehicles, and can also be retrofitted to older models.

However, this isn't completely foolproof and some have discovered ways to fool the transponder system. Proximity keys

Proximity keys are the newest keyless entry technology, and are becoming popular on a variety vehicles. The key fob is stored in a pocket or bag and used to unlock the car. The key fob connects to the vehicle, removing immobilisers and permitting it to start.

However proximity key systems have some drawbacks. If the key fob gets damaged or lost, it can't be used to start your car. A locksmith or a dealership will have to replace it, and this can be expensive. The fobs are also powered by batteries, so they'll have to be periodically replaced.

Another drawback of proximity keys technology is that it disrupts the cause-and-effect loop we're used to with physical keys. In the case of a traditional lock, if you touch the lock and it opens, you know you have the key. You'll need to be within a specified distance to activate the proximity-sensing lock.

Keyless Entry Systems

The days of storing a spare key outside the home are long gone, and landlords can provide tenants with better security by installing the keyless entry system. These systems sync to back-end programs and allow landlords to monitor entrance and exit. Furthermore, these systems make it easier for tenants to enter the property in case in the event of a crisis.

A keyless entry system sends encrypted signals to an inside receiver. The receiver then detects the signal and then unlocks or starts the engine. It also detects a driver's presence and adjust the car's settings according to their preferences. For instance, if the driver is carrying bags in their hands, it will recognize this and close the doors.

Some keyless entry systems can be vulnerable to attacks even though they are very safe. A replay attack, for instance is when the remote control signal sent by the device is recorded, and then transmitted again at a later point. This can be prevented by using an algorithm in the keyless entry system to ensure that every transmission is different from the previous ones.

A keyless entry system has the advantage that it doesn't require changing locks each when a tenant leaves. It's expensive to replace locks every time a tenant moves out and therefore it is sensible that landlords stay away from this expense as much as possible. Furthermore with a keyless access system the only thing that is required is resetting the key, which is faster and less costly than replacing the entire lock.
