Smart mapping is another feature that allows it to identify areas in your home that require attention and provides a cleaning path to get around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of moving around toys that are placed on the floor or furniture legs that are sticking out from under the furniture. It also comes with a sensor that can snap Roomba to its real-world location if it begins to drift away from its initial location.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers underneath the bottom of the Roomba that don't have bristles and, therefore, tend to resist tangles more than earlier models. These are also a little taller than older rollers and are able to fit under beds and couches that are low and are designed to allow this model to move more easily across a variety of flooring types.

The Roomba 980 stands out from other models with a high-end price tag by its new dirt detection feature, which uses a camera in order to detect dirt embedded. This is a significant improvement over the previous model, which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage method to bounce around a room and clean it at minimum three times from various angles.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is ready to use immediately. After you have removed the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from undercarriage, all you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, hit its large "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will automatically return to the dock when it runs out of battery or is full of sand. There are also indicator lights on top that indicate when its bin is empty, or when it requires recharging, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
