Most robotic vacuums require maintenance, like emptying (and occasionally, rinsing) the bin and wiping sensors and cameras. Additionally, they must be plugged into the power source. A lot of them have apps for smartphones for scheduling, setting and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the latest model in the series of top-of-the-line deebot robot vacuum cleaner vacuum cleaners that are a staple of every modern household. This model comes with a HEPA-filter that will assist those who suffer from allergies. It also comes with a powerful battery which can be cleaned for Commercial Robot Vacuum up to two hours before returning to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

It also has the feature of smart mapping, which makes use of multiple sensors to suss out the areas of your home that need attention and create a cleaning route around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of moving around toys abandoned on the floor or furniture legs that are sticking out from under things. It also comes with a sensor that can snap Roomba to reality if it begins to wander away from its initial location.

iRobot also added the option of rolling rollers under the Roomba that do not have bristles and are therefore more likely to withstand knots than earlier models. They are also taller and can fit under beds or couches that are low. They're specifically designed to make this model more movable on various floor types.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other models of this class however, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature that utilizes cameras to identify particles of dirt embedded. This is a nice improvement over the previous version which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around a room and clean at least three times from different angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on both carpets and hard floors. It scored extremely well on low-pile carpet and also on mid-pile. It did a good job collecting pet hair, but had a difficult time with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the top performing robots on our list despite the slight limitations. It's also not as expensive as other top-of the-line models. It comes with many of the features we would expect from a top model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integrations you'll find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get up and running immediately. After taking off the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all you have to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its big "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will automatically return to docking station when it is running out of batteries or is full of sand. There are also indicators on top that show the bin is empty, when it requires recharging, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
