The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list that benefits from slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable player on intermediate and short routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other receivers who are based on possession are at the bottom of the list. They are better in shorter and intermediate routes than deep areas. Jeudy will be the Rams principal slot receiver this season is a sleeper selection. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a larger role in downfield targets. Speed receivers are usually more effective when lined up inside, because they can get targeted way down the field, and often find themselves with one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

On the flip side there are some excellent slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures in the passing game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore being the most effective tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). By using McDuffie in the slot when they run nickel or dime-type packages, and then placing him on the outside of base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a huge advantage when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top jackpot slots NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter, their slot counterparts are just as good. Wide receivers with a high slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers than to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore fascinating to see a receiver like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in 2 of the sets. Lamb also plays at the X-position, and can make big plays outside. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this list, but he's still highly skilled and is an excellent fit for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a player who is able to put huge numbers with targets of both kinds is another example. He has a very high slot receiver rating and is among the league's best payouts slots at catching back-shoulder throws however, he's also a formidable opponent for contested catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps so far this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA for cornerbacks that are aligned in the slot, which makes him an important player in the defense of his team. He has struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is because he's playing with safety and linebackers who aren't able to compete with Hilton's speed, size and route-running abilities.
