Lexus Key Replacement - Replacing a Remote Or Fob

If you have a traditional lexus key fob key that switches on the ignition, or a smart key for your car, which starts by pressing an arrow, eventually the battery inside the fob will deplete. It's easy to replace it with a paperclip. Simply pop the old battery out and insert the new one (refer to the owner's guide to see which type of battery you need) and then secure it back in the correct position.

Keys

Lexus keys are not easy to replace and require a specialist locksmith for car keys to create a spare working. This is because each Lexus key is equipped with microchips that need to be programmed to sync with the immobiliser of your vehicle in case it does not. If it doesn't, the vehicle will not be able to start.

You'll have to replace the batteries in your smart or conventional key. Both keys operate by turning the barrel of the ignition. This can be done by yourself however you'll need an inexpensive Phillips Screwdriver, a 20p coin and a paperclip. On the front of the fob, you will see one or two screws loosen them and place them in a secure place (they're small and easily lost). The fob is removed, revealing an indentation that is circular where the metal key will be. The battery can be removed with the help of a paperclip. Insert the new battery, ensuring that it's properly inserted. Then, clip the inside of the key back together.

Remotes

Replacing a Lexus remote or fob is complicated and requires skilled locksmiths who have the right tools and experience. Certain models require the transponder inside the key to be programmed so that it can work with the immobiliser system of the car. These chips are programmed by different methods, based on the model of Lexus. Next, pop the old battery away and then insert the new one. Be sure the replacement battery is inserted in the proper polarity. Finally, clip the inside of the fob back together and replace the key with the metal.

Transponder Chips

Transponder chips can be found in key heads of a majority of new vehicles manufactured after 1995. They can be used to disarm immobiliser systems. If you've got keys with a chip inside, the head is covered with a plastic cover which can be pulled off to reveal an L-shaped metal key. A transponder-chip replacement key or fob is a process that involves multiple stages. It involves cutting the keys precisely and programming the chip to communicate with the vehicle immobiliser.

A transponder is a device with Non-Volatile Memory. It is comprised of a set of windings that are delicate wires that are twisted around a tube. They look similar to those in an electric motor. The windings generate a coded message that the car can read. If the code is correct it will allow the car to start.

There are two kinds of transponder chips, one known as the 80 bit, and the other one is called a circle + (General Motors). The first kind is reusable, but it must be unlocked using a special machine to function on a different vehicle compatible with it. The latter type is more difficult because the previous ones are often broken or drilled through, or discarded after key cases are replaced. They are able to be salvaged however and then used to create an ad-hoc key that doesn't require batteries to operate.

Immobiliser Systems

Immobiliser systems are electronic security devices that stop thieves from starting your car. It operates by sending an electronic signal from the vehicle to the key whenever you try to start it. The electronic chip in the key responds with a unique code that must match that of the vehicle in order to start.
