How to unlock Your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs provide greater functionality and comfort compared to traditional manual keys. However, they require batteries that eventually get worn out and need to be replaced. If your Volvo keyfob works only intermittently, the battery may be failing and you'll need to replace it soon.

Fortunately, there are easy steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery at your own expense. Find a clean surface to work on. Then, lay out all the tools you require. Then, locate the battery's hole, and then open it with a flathead, coin, or any other similar tool. Then, carefully remove the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook for the key-ring. Use rubber gloves to protect the electronic contact surfaces.

After the battery has been removed, insert the new battery into its socket. Make sure the positive side of the battery is facing upwards and the clips are all seated. Then slide the cover down and toward the key-ring loop section until it loosens and slips off. Then, remove the cover to reveal the hidden key blade. You can use it to unlock your car from the driver's seat in the event that you've lost or damaged your key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Most modern vehicles are equipped with key fobs which can perform more than just unlock or lock the doors. They also have useful functions, such as summoning and auto-parking the vehicle. In fact, the new Volvo XC60 can even remotely start your engine with its key fob buttons. What exactly does it do?

First, find an area of clean work surface on which you can lay out all the required items for this project. Place the fob on the work surface with the Volvo logo facing upwards. Use a flathead, coin, or other similar tool to flip open the battery hatch. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces of the fob with your tools, as this can cause the fob's key to stop functioning properly.

After the hatch has been opened, slide the battery into its socket. Make sure the positive (+ side) is facing up. Once the clips have been locked into place, remove the battery cover and then reassemble the fob.

By pressing the unlock button, you will turn off the alarm and open the driver's door. If you press it again, you can unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to open the windows on an extremely hot day or to let in fresh air before getting behind the wheel. If you want more options, the keyfob could be used to turn on the ERS, which will activate the climate control system of your vehicle. It will then warm or cool the vehicle to the desired temperature settings when the vehicle is in a parking.

How to change the battery

If your key fob no longer locks or unlocks your vehicle it is possible that it is time to replace the battery. Changing the battery is fairly easy and requires only a small flathead screwdriver or plastic pry bar tool. First, locate the small slot where the backup / emergency key for ignition made of metal used to reside. Use the blade of a screwdriver, or prybar tool into this slot, and gently pull the back of the fob. Once you have opened the fob, you can locate and remove the CR 2032 3V battery. Replace the battery and snap together the fob.

Note: Certain older Volvo models have a different type of battery, the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have the thickness of 7/10ths a millimeter less than a CR2032 and you'll have to be very careful when replacing your battery.

Your key fob comes with a transponder that has been programmed to work with your Volvo. When you insert it into the ignition barrel an antenna reads its code and compares it with the one stored in your car's start inhibitor module. If the codes do not match, your car will not start. This is an important security measure to stop your Volvo from being started if a wrong key is used.

If you lose your keys then you'll need to take it to a dealer to get it replaced, and your vehicle programmed. This procedure can take as long as 10 days and will cost you lots of money. However, there is an option to cut down on some money by programming the system at home. You can find the necessary details in your owner's manual or on the internet. Take off the logo and non-logo covers and place your key fob on a clean surface. Press the grey button located in the upper right corner of your fob. The cover will be opened to reveal the CR2032 battery.
