Slot Efficiency

The goal of slot efficiency is of maximizing the number of slot switches that can be used while not violating a set of predefined constraints. The bottom half of the list was filled with more possession-based receivers including Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnson. The Bucs will likely move the latter two into the slot more often during this season, which will increase their targets. However, they'll have to improve their scoring on the perimeter to keep their high standards.

Speedy wideouts are the biggest benefit of moving into the slot, because they generally have a much easier time getting open in the field when their route isn't obstructed by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who's not a speedy wideout but would benefit from more slot time. He's a solid target for short and intermediate routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other receivers who are based on possession are at the bottom of the list. They are better in shorter and intermediate routes than deep zones. Jeudy is a great option to be a sleeper for this season, as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler, meanwhile, should thrive on more short-to-middle and intermediate routes, because it was where he excelled when playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a great replacement for departed wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to run deep routes. However, it isn't always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skill set as some receivers excel in the slot, but cannot play deep, and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance, leads the league in goals per game (4.8), but is only ranked 6th when it comes to the position that scores (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets are from outside and it's difficult to get a first down when playing a wide-open, deep route.

On the other hand, certain receivers excel at playing inside and can't do much on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his routes in the slot, as opposed to only 26% on boundaries routes. This is an enormous difference that shows how much more productive Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside most of the time on his passing downs. He is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also ran 51% of his perimeter routes in the last season, and is a star in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more efficient when they align inside. They can be targeted further down the field, and often face one-on-one coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also part of this group. Both have been able generate pressures in the pass game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the best tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). By deploying McDuffie in the slot when they run nickel or dime packages, and then placing him on the outside of base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his skills. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous benefit when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are also good. As a group wide receivers with a high slot receiving grade score touchdowns at roughly the same rate as those who are on the perimeter. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers than to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore fascinating to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in 2 of the sets. He's actually running more routes in the slot than most of the players on this list. This is an excellent opportunity to increase matchup benefits for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.

Of course, he plays the X position, and makes some big plays on the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this ranking however, he's a very high-graded receiver and is an excellent fit for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, another player who can put huge numbers on both types of targets, is a different example. He is one of the best in the game at taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a great contested-catch player.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks aligned in the slot, making him a crucial player in the defense of his team. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is because he's been playing with safety and linebackers who cannot match Hilton's speed, size and ability to run routes.
