How to Replace an audi new key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

happy-young-woman-with-key-sitting-in-new-car-2022-12-16-21-31-14-utc-min-scaled.jpgCharles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, Audi key fobs three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know both the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easily accessible particularly if you're looking at a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues in your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi Q7 Key since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This part is common across the audi spare key cost 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find some good ones in wrecking yards.Ford-New.png
