The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list that benefits from more slot time is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable player on intermediate and short routes.

The last spot on the list is populated by possession-based receivers who perform better on short and intermediate routes than deep ones, such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a solid sleeper pick this year since he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are expected to be involved in more downfield targets. Some receivers are better at playing inside, while others struggle to do so on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He logged 74% of his routes in the slot, compared to just 26% on boundary routes. That's a huge difference, and illustrates how much more efficient he is when aligned in the slot.

Furthermore there is the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). However, he also played 51% of his perimeter routes last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more efficient when they line up inside, because they can get targeted way down the field and frequently have one-on-one coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also part of this group. Both have been able to generate pressures in the pass game, with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore having the highest tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Through using McDuffie in the slot when they're running nickel or dime packages, and then placing him on the outside of base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been an enormous benefit when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are also excellent. Wide receivers with a high slot grade score touchdowns about the same as those on the perimeter. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent in their target distribution when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options like tight ends and backfield passers.

That's why it's interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, because he plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of the sets. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than most of the players on this chart. This is an excellent way to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.

Of course, he plays the X position and makes huge plays on the perimeter too. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this ranking, but he's still highly skilled and is an excellent match for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player who's capable of putting up huge numbers on both targets. He has a high slot receiving grade and is among the league's best at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also a great player for contested-catch.

Another player on this list that's an authentic slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-best EPA for runs stopped among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a valuable part of his team's defensive line. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is because he's been playing with safety and linebackers who aren't able to match Hilton's speed, size, and ability to run routes.
